Hopes and dreams

I've just come back from bagpipe practice and wondered what you all think of the music. The similarity between struggling with an unruly octopus who objects to being blown into its nether regions comes to mind!
I was camping on Dartmoor a few years ago, and out of the mist at dawn came the most unearthly sound, and as it got nearer a strange apparition appeared playing the most wonderful heart stirring music. Since then it has been my dream to climb Ben Nevis again with my pipes, and play as the sun comes up from the top of the world!

Yes, personally I love the sound of bagpipes, though I'm not sure I'd like to listen to the early stages of someone learning to play them! As you say, their music really is heart-stirring, and usually played with great passion. I've often heard them on my tours in the Highlands, but sadly, the last time I heard a piper playing them was at a childs' funeral, and as always they seemed to speak for everyones' emotions at the time.

Good luck with your plan to play them on Ben Nevis. I guess that will mean an overnight camp on the summit, or do you plan to set off a few hours before dawn?

The eerie sound of bagpipes over dartmoor give m shiver down my spine ok scotland you might expect. set yourself a target to do the three highest peak in uk.scaffel pike, snowdon and ben nevis certainly be different might wake the welsh up a bit the english would just think it a scotsman on night out and got lost lol, Sounds like a grand gesture enjoy it get someone to video it and you tube it all the best with it

Love my music and have been learning to play the guitar for a couple of years now (left it too late in life really) !!!!.....I also sing in a local ladies choir we do anything from pop music to classical. My hope and dreams is to become a little bit more confident with it, and and also to climb Ben Nevis of course :)

Don't want to split hairs, but the 3 highest peaks in the UK are Ben Nevis, Ben McDui and Braeriach, Snowdon is about the 70th Highest and Scaffel somewhere after that!

But I know what you meant! :)

much as i like bagpipes i prefer uilleann pipes,i think they're more flexible and certainly less work to play!ronan browne is pretty good.i just like plaintive music

Just had a listen to the uilleann pipes on YouTube. See what you mean, had never heard them before.

A Piper was used at my wifes Uncles funeral the other week. As he was the last of 4 brothers to die and they were from the Shetlands, it was very moving and appropriate.

I like the Northumbrian pipes myself, Katherine Tickell is one of the finest pipers.

Absolutely love the bagpipes. Think it is a wonderful sound. My husband has always said when he gets buried he wants bagpipes playing in the distance. Very cheerful he is. ( He did have cancer at the time, but thankfully is now clear). Still wants bagpipes when eventually it does happen.

take look at "uilleann pipes, first week marker" a tune by a guy who normally plays the bagpipes, after one week on the uilleann pipes.may surprise you

I like the uilleann pipes too!

For sad music, the pipes are only matched by the fiddle, imo.
Bagpipes are also great for marching music.

I suppose we just have to accept that for some folk the sound is a painful, grating, annoyance, but, luckily, that's not a problem I have.

Perhaps everybody has his "Achilles heel": mine is I can't abide church bells. I don't know why, as I don't mind a single, tolling bell!
Must be a bit cranky, I suppose!

sean rua.

how can anyone not like bellringers?especially when they decide to enliven your sunday lie-in with a medley of beatles tunes at 7 am.i can think of other uses for a bell rope!

I love the sound of bagpipes, youll have to come to a meet and let us hear you play x:dance:

im biased as i used to play the bagpipes and i think they sound awsome, but i just wish i had never given up playing them :(

Thank you all!
My dog hates them and when I go out I have to hide them in the cupboard just in case he decides tio permanently quieten the noise!
I'm thinking of trying the Smallpipes-perhaps they wont be so annoying for him!
There's nothing quite like the birl-turns your blood to water-a heavenly sound. When I get good enough I'll definitely bring them to a meet! But....I might be the only one that turns up-you guys might hide!
We meet in a huge hall and up above us there are people ballroom dancing-I wonder if they occasionally forget themselves and do a Highland fling!
