For those who are looking to renew the house and buildings policy, Halifax are giving £50 cashback and an extra 10% discount if you have an account with them. I was with M&S renewal went up by 20% with no claims made.

The Camping and Caravaning Club does a policy that allows you to be away 180 days a year.
Very few offer more than 60 days.

Yes, we’ve used them for a few years now. Tried alternative quotes but none matched them for period of unnoccupancy and avoidance of difficult conditions.

hi
make sure you read the small print. my mother was sold house insurance by lloyds
bank when she visited the branch. the roof was damaged in a storm and when she
tried to claim they used every con in the book not to pay. they sent a someone out to
have a look he put a camera on a pole took phtos and said the nails for the tiles were
corroded and it was fair wear and tear. when i rang up to complain and said the nails
were copper and did not corrode they said there was no storm. when i gave dates they
said the wind had to be more than 55 mph and it was not on that date. even though the
weather station is 4 miles from the house. we done a official complaint but they just said
go to omnibusman which i have not done yet.

Saga only this week sent me a renewal at 28% increase.
I know they would reduce it, if I telephone, but couldn't be bothered

I bother! I bargain them down to the last penny and then thank them for their time and inform them that I am moving my business to a competitor who was prepared to offer me a realistic price from the outset

My household insurance (with Quote me happy) is £10 LESS than last year, are they a crap company? probably but the last time I had dealings with a big name (meaning big price) company they spent £700 gathering evidence to reject my claim - a local builder carried out the remedial work for £900!

so unless the house burns down or the roof blows off I will not be making any claims

Good luck with that, we had exactly the same a few years ago, thankfully we went with a roofer who had more qualifications than I thought possible (we usually get a competent roofer/builder friend to do any work), but had heard of this problem with 'storm' classification. As it is, meteorology is something hubby knows about, and as the weather station they were taking reading from was 10 miles away, the ombudsman ruled in our favour. Make sure you have all your facts, contact dates etc as they ask a lot of questions. The really annoying thing was we had not made a claim in over 35 years, and the b***ards weren't big enough to apologise.

I am with the NFU,for the Van and the house/woodland, they are a bit dearer than the big nationals, but they will help straight off and are helpful in case of damage and theft. Too dear for the car though but it is not worth much so doesn't matter about that damage claims on it.

When I enquirer about this I was told that 3 months was maximum with no one visiting the property. Longer than that someone has to go round once a week and inspect it. Not just externally but internally as well. Think there was also something about draining the water and heating during the winter.

We had quotes from both NFU and Saga and fell about laughing. It was just rediculous hundreds of pounds over what others were charging. NFU was spectaular in the overage. Baring in mind we live in one of the least risk post codes in the UK. The wife came up owth the figures. We are paying £270 odds and NFU quoted £790 and the agent was in St Bosewells just down the road so he knows the area and he was dumfounded. It was a "No" from us.

So we spoke to AIB and a few others and are now very happy indeed.

We're with Direct Line for exactly this reason.
