Hi
just found this great forum. I been looking for a camper for 2 months now and cannot find one to suit me for under 7k....SO my plan is to do not myself!
I been looking at lwb vans iveco s transits movanos etc can't decide. Also looked at ex network rail mess vans as they have some bits I could use. I want spray foam insulation as I do lots of long winter camping unless there is anything better to use. Any tips appreciated :)

Hi and wellcome.

Plenty of members are self builders who can offer advise on any queries or problems you encounter.

Happy wilding.

Hi Yomper

Afraid I don't qualify as one of the knowledgeable self-builders (I just tinkered with a home-built I bought that had all the basics but needed some work - I haven't built from scratch).

As stated though - there people here with loads of experience - walking encyclopaedias of camper van construction!

Vans? Lots of opinions and seems to me that newer stuff is pretty similar (like Citroens / Peugeouts / Fiats etc. all basically being the same thing under the badge, and all being way too complex electronically for my poor head).

All I can offer is that my work has run the Renault Trafic / Vauxhall Movano things (2007-on) and worked them hard and they've stood up well. Having engine management warning lights on the dash is not uncommon, but none of them have actually stopped or gone into Limp Mode like some horror stories you hear about. We had an 07 Nissan Primastar (basically the Vauxhall too) that got well loaded and hammered well into the 140K + miles. Dash was lit up like an Xmas Tree but she kept on running without issues. If our experience is typical then you could do worse.

I'm interested in your spray insulation plan and would love to see details / results of that!

Good luck with your build - I enjoy seeing what it is that people build and come up with! Let us know how you get on, and post pictures as you go along please!

have a look at SBMCC as well .should add, quite a few of the members there went for the spray insulation and rate it. you can get a firm,or get your own bottles, roughly similar costs i think

Hi and welcome to the forum, have fun

Thanks for the welcome and loulou thank u for the advice. I did look at primastar/vivaro just slightly to small although look great and better mpg. :)

I went for a transit (02, mark 6, lwb, hi roof) as parts, new and secondhand, are easy to get, fairly cheap, and pretty much any mechanic knows their way round them. It was a private buy from a window fitter but was Network Rail for 7 years so good service history etc. Some inherent problems with it, leaky seams etc, but once you are familiar with it's eccentricities, they are usually relatively easy to spot and sort out, especially with help from ford transit forum.

I'm in mine all year round, not quite full timing but nearly, so good insulation essential, and adding more each winter. Search for threads on insulation, loads of them.

Layout is ongoing, nearly 3 years now and I'm still constantly tweaking it, so still not yet boarded in. But it's gradually beginning to suit my needs perfectly which are different to other folk. Lots of fun lying in bed doing mental jigsaw puzzles with gas bottles, sinks, stoves, etc.

Fitting solar panel 2 months has been life changing! Definitely recommended.

Loads of threads too about various heating options - gas heaters, diesel heaters, wood burners, bio ethanol etc.

Self Building

Might as well add my two penny worth having built 4 vans in the last 10 years. Started with a Transit then moved onto a Ducato, Sprinter and have finally settled for an Iveco, all vehicles have been LWB and Hi-Roof.
Best advice I can offer is plan, plan and then plan some more, buy the best van for your budget (giving yourself a budget for the van helps weed out the expensive and cheap stuff) so you know you will be working with something that will last for a few years. As WVW has said Transits are fairly common and should be easy to pick up but watch out for the dreaded tin worm, they dont call them Daganam Dustbins for nothing, but having said that they are a good first building platform. Scour AutoTrader, you can pick up some good vehicles from there and as you can specify where in the country you want to buy it from it will also give you a chance of going round and kicking the tyres so to speak before you buy. It will also give you a good idea of what you can a: afford and b: want.
The vehicle must suit your needs, remember that most panel vans are only 1.8m wide internally at a certain height and bed platforms are usually built at this height. You will be surprised at just how much you can shoe horn into the living area of the van with careful planning.
If you are intending to build it properly, the DVLA have a certain criteria for reclassification, the build list can be easily found searching the internet. Re registering will not only keep the DVLA happy but will enable you to lower your insurance premium.
Download a copy of Google SketchUp, personally I have found this invaluable with the planning. The latest vehicle went through 6 different guises before I found a layout that both worked and fitted. Also consider how many people are going to be accommodated (it will sleep how many)
I also use mine all year round and its insulated with Rock Wool with Kingspan in the roof void and the floor. Spray foam might be good but if you are on a tight budget it will eat a chunk before you even start.
Use Ebay to source parts for the inside, you can pick up some amazing bargains sometimes, otherwise trawl around your local caravan breakers. Not only are they an Aladdin cave of stuff the breakers have a vast amount of knowledge and most are very helpful. There are a few companies spread around the country that also supply self builders, probably the most uses by SB's is Magnums at Grimbsy, make sure you take a responsible adult with you to hold your wallet as the warehouse is amazing.
Probably the most daunting part of the build is cutting holes for Windows, Roof Lights etc. Rule of thumb here is measure twice and cut once, and its not that scary really.
Good luck with your hunt, build and may the road be flat and long

mine Peugeot boxer

I bought a Peugeot boxer 17 seater mini bus took the seats out put in caravan seating/ bed then bolted in B&Q wall units as they are narrower fit a two ring + grill cooker bit of carpet and soft furnishings job done total cost £5 ,700 that included my mobility ramp of flea bay. So my advice go for it you never know what you can do until you try.

Hi there

I'd suggest avoiding motorhome specific kit when looking at kitchen items, as it is generally expensive, ugly and of poor build quality compared to domestic kit.

Bear weight in mind but also keep it in context. That's more an issue if using lwb vans though.

Get yourself over to sbmcc for lots of ideas and tech info

The beauty of a self build is that you can put in just what you want, and like mine you can avoid the dreaded "Old Fart" look. Another source of parts is right here, as we self builders usually have bits left over, like copper pipe for gas, or wiring, it's allways worth asking. I've had a few Sevels, all new as my late husband was severely disabled, and didn't have to pay VAT. We had the odd little problem, but nothing major, and we used to drive to Spain every winter, and mooch around Europe most of the summer. So my advice...go for it, and good luck.

Thanks for all the great advice. I have looked at loads of vans from Cornwall to Scotland spent weeks and £100 ' s of £ in diesel.
I have always wtd to build a van myself BUT I think I just found a very good buy and I. Just phoned the owner he will take 6500 ebay item 261634871371 any comments he says it's solid all round no rust and his the 2nd owner

Very nice looking van.
If it's as good as he says, why DIY.

A decent LT van going to be around £2500+, £1500 for a rough one.
Suppose it depends how valuable time is, and how much spare time you have. Theres plenty of hours doing a job like that.

I am off to look at the camper tomorrow. I think it is pretty close to my needs. If it's as good as it looks I'm going to buy it and maybe next spring sell it to start my own day van as I am eager to do my own build using spray foam and solar but winter.is near and I don't fancy starting cutting holes and insulationg in this weather. I'm. Sure I will get my.money back when.its time.to sell it on :)

Hello yomper and welcome

No knowledge of self build, but plenty advice on here from those who have. Good luck with the build! ;)

Network Rail Transit

Hi

Hi Just joined this site myself. Just done converting an ex Network Rail Transit would recommend trying to find one as the electrics and heating are already in and easy to work round. (check the heating work properly 1st though as repairs are expensive the one I got didn't work due to pump missing arm and a leg to replace by dealer)

If you need any help give me a nudge and I will try an help.

Network Rail Transit

Hi

2 years ago converted my 1st van a Network Rail Transit. Good starting vehicle as Elec etc were already in. If you need any help or pointers give me a shout. As a 1st try it works well for us but as always would do some things differently
