No not me, well not yet, I have a 93 swift kontiki with a Talbot 2.4 turbo diesel engine.
She has just been into the garage to have an oil leak fixed.

Now I have just taken her for a spin and the temp gauge has shot sky high, seem to be that the fan is not working.
There is water and oil in her, would it be a water pump problem or the fan or both. Any help would be much appreciated
.
Many thanks
Dave

Hi
could be many things but if the fan isnt running when the temprature guage is showing hot then ,either the guage is reading wrong the sender unit is suspect ,the wires to the fan or switch have been disturbed or the thermostatic switch has defunked ,
if the cooling system thermostat was at fault the fan would be running trying to cool things down ,
and as the other work has been done recently its policy to check for lose conections first

Would not have thought the fan would be responsible for sudden temp rise this time of year. Where was oil leak from and how was it fixed?

Richard

Sounds like the cooling fan is not being switched on by the thermostatic switch(mounted in radiator),
may be wiring got disturbed by garage when fixing oil leak.

Do NOT risk cooking your engine until this is sorted.

Good luck

cheers for that, i will have a close look at the wiring tomorrow.
the oil leak was coming from the rocker cover gasket, this was replaced and reassembled.

gutted, my wife is on a weekend shoping trip with the girl friends, i was hoping to have a sleep over at the beach with my kids on saturday after fish and chips. :)

Right

I have just gone out to have a look at the wiring, the temp guage is still maxed out when I turned her on.
The water is only slightly warm as i havent had her running for about 4 hours?

Any ideas

Dave

sounds like you have a dead short on the guage or the sender unit has stuck shut your local dealer should have stock and its a simple job to swap (screw out screw in bung wires on top up water )you should only lose a cup full if you are quick
MOS

Just carefully check the wire that leads to the temperature sender mounted near the thermostat housing at the front top of the engine (or wherever on your vehicle) Make sure it hasn't been damaged or squashed when they replaced the rocker cover.
Pull the wire off the sender and see what the gauge reads. Follow it back into the loom and check for damaged insulation.

Would not effect the water flow but could have an effect on the oil but cannot see it being blocked. Check wiring as above but as bumperman says do not go far until sorted.

Richard

Thank you to all, in the daylight on Saturday morning I started to trace the cables, I quickly found one of the cables had been trapped under the rocker cover, this must have melted as the engine got hot and shorted out the temperature sensor. I have done a temporary fix of the cable, so it’s all working fine now, back to the garage in the week so they can fix properly.

We had a great night last night parked up on the beach watching the fireworks

Many thanks
Dave

Good news, Pleased you got a result. Think they should give you a free service.

Richard

that maybe ok for you but not for everyone, i could do anything with a car until i had a accident, now i cant even change a tyre alone, so need breakdown cover just for that.

im sure if they could have they would have done it themselves, yet have to take it to a garage to have it done. not everyone is mechanicly minded you it seems you are

may be a little late to reply really but check the cover gasket hasn't been damaged when they trapped the cable,

ya cheers for that.
she has gone back to the garage today to get sorted.
many thanks for all the help and advice

Dave
