I've just got myself a nice sony ericsson walkman phone (i do like a bit of music when wilding) and tried to put some music on it.

Of course it didn't come with a usb cable, or software. No problem thought I - I'll take out the micro sd card, bung it in the card reader, copy my music files across... no worries.

So i did that, put the card in the phone... no music. Card back in the card reader, double check, yep.. music definitely there.

So online for some research. Not an uncommon problem, need to convert the wma files to m4a (whatever that means). "Here, try this free audio converter software" says someone. So i did ... took around 3 hours to convert all my music. Put it on the card, card back in the phone.

SUCCESS! Nearly. All the songs are there, but over the beginning of each song is a voice saying "free sample blah blah blah. To upgrade, please visit wwwdotgiveuslotsofmoneydotcom.

So...

Can anyone recommend some safe, free audio converting software, that wont take a full day to convert 30 odd hours of music (as the last one i tried was going to).

If not, the phone is going back to the shop and i'm swapping it for a samsung (never had this aggro with my old samsung)

:rolleyes2:

Search for "Open Source audio converter" not "Free audio converter"

Searching using the term "Free" for windows programs seems to usually mean limited use or worse.
A search for "Free open source audio converter" will get you headed in the right direction. The difference is that the open source community generally police the code used to make applications so no chance of spyware, and depending on the license, it usually means the product can't be sold, it will always be free including the source code.
I found fre:ac - free audio converter which seems to support the formats you want.
Hope this helps.

what format were you trying to use?

did the card come with the phone or was it bought seperatley, as if seperatley it'd have been a good idea to format it first.

Steventux - that link does look like what i need, thanks for that. "Open source" search tip duly noted.

Marcs - the card is a standard micro sd storage card, bought seperately from but at the same time as the phone. Will hold basically any file i care to put on it. My music is mainly wma files, which i thought that the sony walkman would be compatible with (but apparently not.

Cheers guys.

what model do you have my sony play mp3 file not a problem usb cable not a problem if you need one will check that it will fit your phone if iknow the model number

It's a spiro, i think it's just the wma files that are the issue.

You'd think it would be compatible really, what with windows media player being the most common media playing software on the planet!

Thanks for the offer oldish hippy, but I've just ordered a usb cable from ebay. Hoping that i'll just be able to sync that way.

Update

iTunes did the job, so thanks Dogfather!

Also thanks everyone for all suggestions.

The easiest and best to use (and free of course) is

FORMAT FACTORY

Just Google, download it, choose the format you want - easy peasy.
