Help & advice

Hi all,

I currently run a Compass Advangarde 120 motorhome and as a first van it's been great.

However I have thoughts of upgrading but struggle to find vans that tick all or most of our boxes and that is not excessively too long or mega expensive, at times it's like searching for the motorhome holy grail - does it exist.:cry:

Has anyone any ideas where/what to look at for for a rear lounge/half dinette layout van, preferably a low profile 4 belted seat model?

Cheers

Hi hawkmoon, If you want to get a M/home bargain, I would check BCA at Meacham. I think they have Motorhome and caravam auctions every fortnight lately, and have lots detailed on their web site. We went early in the new year and there were a few bargains to be had. The cheapest being an old Talbot for £750. There were about a dozen motorhomes for sale, but most were caravans, and one year old twin axel £17,000 plus caravans, were going for between £6,000 and £6.900. Shame I was'nt into tuggers. I think all of these cheap caravans were bought by a guy with Swift printed on his jumper. Or course this was in low season, and you would have to check them over first for water ingress etc. Which is why people buy from a dealer with a full warranty. Hope this is of help to stretch your pennies, Rgds Graham.

i dont think you will ever find the perfect van ,well one that ticks every box that is, there will always be somthing missing . most vans out there are built to suit most people most of the time ,i think the only way to get the perfect van would be to have one built specialy to your own needs and spec ,and that would be very expensive and i gaurantee that in a few months of ownership you would say i wish we had!!! well i think you get my drift . you could buy a van then rebuild it inside to your needs .if you get a van that is 80% of what you need you are doing well

I had the Elddis Autoquest 120, similar to yours and had no bother at all with it.

It is nearly impossible to find a sub 6 metre coachbuilt with 4 belted seats. It is hard to find a sub 6 metre panel conversion also. This means that you will have to go bigger. Some Autotrails have the rear lounge but many are now fixed rear bed layouts.

I went from the Autoquest (5.3 metres??) to an 8.2 metre van and it only took a few days to forget I was driving something bigger. A bigger van will use a bit more diesel but it is very little. A bigger van with a longer wheelbase than the Boxer SWB on the Compass will give a more stable ride anyway. Your main worry will be finding a post 2007 Fiat that has not had gearbox/clutch/flywheel/EGR/ECU problems.

Have a look at these two on my website although you don't say what your budget is.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yes, I realise that all vans are a compromise but I would like an extra couple of belted seats so I can take my parents or freinds out for the day in safety.

I realise that I would need a longer van but was hoping to be in the region of 22~25 foot max.

John I will take a peek at your suggestions, thanks.

Pete

The 630L is fairly close to what I fancy, but I would prefer a 4 berth, low profile rather than 6 & a half dinette rather than a full one.

Does it exist, any other suggestions?

Chausson Flash S2

Our current van its 6m in length, has a proper shower/dressing room and fixed(ish) bed. There's 4 belted forward facing seats, only 1 of which is a lap belt its not rear lounge though. Its a similar price to the Eldis budget vans but a little more stylish IMO.

It was perfect for us and the only smaller van that ticked all our boxes. Unfortunately they're probably only available new (heavily discounted) or nearly new though.

The S2 does look an interesting design with a good bathroom & payload but no rear lounge...

It is unusual to find 4 belts in a 2 berth van though.

Thanks Pete
