6000 of those have 0 posts and haven't been on for years, and another 1000 have only one post so the active membership is probably more like 500-1000 or so.

I've signed the petition but not sure what good will come of it.

It says "use of height and width barriers which discriminate against motorcaravans" but in some cases that is precisely what the the council/landowner wants to do. They don't want people overnighting or travelers vehicles or lorries stopping there. Usually because of local residents complaints or something.

The same stupidity leads to all these "residents only" parking roads when we have paid our road tax the same as everyone else.

At the end of the day, it's the local people who elect the councils and it's going to be impossible to dictate to them so they can't make their own bye laws especially pertaining to land which the council or the local parish owns. To stop them making a bye law like this would require major reforms to the whole fabric of local and national Government.

In other words, it's not going to happen, but you can but raise awareness I suppose :D

Signed up, don't think it will a vote winner, but cant complain if you don't do anything about it.

It's pretty pointless really. Height barriers are a local authority issue, nothing to do with national government. Even the wording of the petition doesn't make much sense.

The barriers are in place for two reasons, to prevent commercial vehicles from using car parks and to prevent 'travellers' setting up camp.

I get just as cross about them as everyone else, but it would be necessary to put a rational case to the individual local authority, outlining suggestions for eliminating the problems that they were erected to prevent, to stand any chance of getting them removed.

This is the same problem as blocked off lay-bys and closed toilets.

Groups setting up camp for extended periods cause the lay-bys to be blocked off as do those who use them for "meeting places" for sex.

Cottagers and Doggers are responsible for at least three picnic areas that had toilet facilities being closed and demolished on the A68 between Darlington and Tow Law.

Our group were looking to open one of these again as a Certificated Site with the co-operation of the local authority. It still had the vandalised toilet block on site and the rent was very low. We have been put off however by the vigilanties who are now roaming about with intent to "Duff up" people they judge are up to no good, that they find on this and other sites or lay-bys in that area. They have even published this information on a web site inciting others to join them.

This particular site we had in mind had a low barrier put in because it was also being used as a hiding place for stolen plant. They would leave it for a day or two and if the police didn't come and take it away they knew it had no tracker so they could dispose of it easily. The one near Tow Law has had barriers and blocks put in, probably for the same reason.

illegal travelors would just cut the barrier with a pds.

Thanks Leo for bringing this to our attention, signed up today.
I can understand some of the comments in the replys, but if we all sit back and do nothing, we have to put up with it, and "If you don't ask you don't get"
that's my two pence worth.

Happy Camping:)and parking for all.

I have to agree with Andy, like it or not, the barriers are there for a reason. There are two sides to every argument.
Not signing

I side with the "barrier`s there for a reason". Its sad that a minority of people mean we all have to be governed and controlled like this. :( I do like the idea (John Thompson) of turning some of these places into CLs though.

height barriers

thanks ,just signed up. if the national goverment does not know the feeling about the barriers it cant do anything, and why should the few spoil it for the law abiding majority, dont hide your heads under the sand,or the dogs will p--- on it.

I've signed,as others have said fi you do nothing thennothing is exactly what you get.

Me too,
What the hell if you dont protest you wont get anywhere .

fighting for no height barriers I totally agree with but you are dealing with snobbery and not in my back yard people . They miss the thing that we spend money in their towns. Anger and frustration should not have to be suffered because of small minded people.

To be honest...our Gordon's real concern is to be seen as a WORLD STATESMAN...to be seen with Obama one to one for the cameras is the height or depth of his ambition

i doubt very much the problem of barriers lies with ourselves but with so-called 'travellers',the ones who set up ,make life unbearable to park there or to people who live locally, work in the area and then dump their rubbish on the carpark! The only way i see anybody winning the argument of moving the barriers are if the areas are policed and this costs money. Its cheaper to keep a few motorhomes out of the area than to have 'travellers' and have to pay to get them moved and constant rubbish removal and damage caused.
