Height Barriers Again

I've no doubt that this topic has been debated many times on here but to be honest I don't blame regional councils one iota for installing them.

When we went over to Skye last week between the bridge and Broadford there were two lay-bys taken up with travellers.

On the way back they had de-camped to the next lay-bys leaving a junked caravan with the door ripped off and full of rubbish and the usual stuff scattered about.

Driving down Loch Lomond last night there were two more lay-bys full of travellers.

It's a pain when when we want to pull into a car park for refreshments and can't because of the barriers but then it must cost thousands of pounds to clear up when the itinerants have gone.

Well I do blame the local councils for taking the easy way out.

Why should the interests of the vast majority be restricted by the seeming uncontrolled/uncontrollable minority?

Local councils should be lobbying central government to give them the powers to act quickly when an anti-social minority are acting in a totally unacceptable fashion.

It seems that local councils have no powers at present to act in the interests of society in general, or the powers that they do have are simply too slow and impractical/unworkable.

It's an absolute nonsense!

Maybe what we need to do is park on the road next to the car parks, and create a nuisance for people. Then when they complain, we can tell them that we've no option, since the council put a height barrier up. We've one near us thats too low for some 4x4's never mind large vans.

Yes I agree with you canalsman it is an absolute nonsense but they won't do it for several reasons.

One of which is being used at the moment down at Dale Farm and that's the race issue.

So in the meantime they abuse the countryside and we don't get to use some car parks.

There is a park near me in Redditch and when I go there a call the park wardens to come and open the barrier to let me in. They also have to let me out.

Nice one Phil....I'm going to try that!......After all they can't really say that we don't have the right.....Scream Discrimination!:mad1:

It is only a thought. Regards height barriers and we have one in our little village in the public car park. My question is, if I am prepared to pay to park my MH for the day to enjoy the sun, sea and sand, why am I banned from doing so. After all I am a citezen of the UK and paid my dues including road taxes. Using a Traveller or Gypsy excuse, is no concern of mine. I have a right to park anywhere legally if I am prepared to pay for it. I wonder what your thoughts are to this point.

Yep, councils should have to open height barriers for legitimate motor-home users.

Most of council funding is from central Gov, so local or not, we have all paid our dues to enjoy the council land where it is open to the public.

I don't think we should nuisance park on local roads as Ste says. That just turns them against us. Better to ring and ask nicely for unlockable barriers so legitimate tax paying citizens with higher vehicles can use the land we have paid for, the same as anyone else.

I don't see why the travellers can't understand that if they adopted the wildcamp ethos of leave no trace there would be less animosity towards them.

We take our rubbish home but they are living in their home so have difficulty finding places to dump waste. If the councils provided for them (for a small fee) and they still left a mess then they should be made responsible for there actions.

There are two traveller sites near me, and right in the middle between the two is a huge council re-cycling and landfill site. However, if you attempt to drive through the council's site gates in a pick up, van, truck and sometimes a landrover (travellers preferred means of transport) you will have to pay £140 for the privilege:scared:

I have an old carpet & settee, had to cut the carpet up into small bits to put out for the bin men 'cos I drive a van and discriminated against:lol-061: The settee is too big to fit in the back of my wife's Range Rover which can get in for free:lol-053: So do I fly tip the settee or leave it out in the front garden for 10 days which is the window of opportunity the council give you for bulky waste home collection? But considering the 6 properties in my street has had no refuse or green bin collections now for over 3 weeks it is starting to resemble a travellers site:lol-053:

If like some say the barriers are too low to get a decent car in then they should go to see the local council Access Officer. Suggest to him/her that they are discriminating against you as inder the law they are obliged to give you equal access. To realy push it you can say that you are driving a wheelchair carrying vehicle and under the disability discrimination act 1995 you can demand equality and if they do nothing about it you are going to the equalities commission with your complaint. Also if like my local councilthey tell you you can get someone to open the barrier by calling a number. asking in the office etc., Tell them the same. They are discriminating against you if the rest of the public wishing to gain entrance do not have to do the same.:mad2:

The reason I am given to understand as to why the Irish gippos are over her is because their own country actually kicked them out by limiting their leagal rights which made their lifestyle incompatable with living in their "home" country.

Basically they got fed up with their own countrymen and kicked them out. They didn't give a jot about thier claimed human rights.

They didn't give a jot about thier claimed human rights.

And the Uk government do ? Ties in nicely with your speed cam thread, If you get bored check out O halloran and Francis Versus the Uk Government at the EHCR.

Indirectly linked to speeding and S172 of the Road traffic Act .... Went all the way to the Grand Chamber...................The result IMHO was astonishing

Travellers don't have toilets in their caravans. They prefer to use the bushes. There lies a major problem after they have gone as besides the obvious rubbish that has to be collected there is also the human "waste".
We had them locally a short while ago and the local woodland had to be cordened off until it was cleaned and that involved clearing most of the established natural shrubs etc. It'll take years to recover - the legacy of travellers to everybody else who previously enjoyed the woodland.

A very good and trusted friend said he actually saw a gippo woman takin a sh*t in full view on a tarmac car park in Felixstowe. No wonder they say their vans are spotlessly clean.

I live near an area frequented by this scum and the mess they leave each time is unbelievable. I once saw 6 dustcarts on the job of removing the crud they had left after ripping off OAP's for tree "surgery".

We had them pitch up on a field near once. The farmer owner of the land and dozens of is friends went rabbit shooting one night on his land where they were pitched. They were gone next morning! I asked how that worked he said they just used their shotguns to shoot the rabbits that were jumping really high and there must me some shot that falls on their vans?

I notice there's never any mention of height barriers when they're advertising all these hugemungas campers of today, you know the sort of thing - lovely computer generated pics of empty and flat parking places beside lakes and rivers with nobody else in sight! Cripes these guys are pushing the dream that in the uk at least is almost impossible to fulfill without going on an expensive site!

Fortunately I get to forget about height barriers roughly halfway between Folkestone and Calais, even though mine fits under most height barriers I still don't really feel wanted wild camping in England.....

This is so true, especially the the bit about not feeling wanted. All these height barriers and no overnight sleeping signs have put my husband right off and he won't go anywhere now.
