If so, could you post up any 'must sees'?

We are off there in the MH in April, arriving in early May. We will be staying for 3 weeks spread across 2 places: one in the east and another in the north-west. The plan is to hire a car in both places for a week at a time.

I need to do some research and plan some places to visit so any input appreciated.

TIA

Taormina, Syracuse, Agrigenta, Palermo, Etna (take your skis if winter months) etc. etc. Park the van and hire a car though Graham much better for the way the roads are. Good budget campsite for east if island in Catania, Camping Joinio.

Thanks Dick - yes I said we'd be doing that in my OP.

Can't remember if I had a PVC or coach-built van when I went there but no problems travelling in van .
All the places already mentioned are must sees .
You can park at the harbour in Catania , at night it was like a scene from a Fellini movie . Also parked in behind a church in central Palermo, guided in by unofficial parking attendant. Actually well worth a couple of euros .
Went to Corleone just because . Was approached four times in cafe by fairly serious guy . His friend wanted to buy my dog , wanted to know how much/why not etc . I left .
Fabulous place to visit.

Some other places to add to the list in no particular order:

Cefalu on the North Coast, East of Palermo. In the West Erice is an interesting hill town with a cable car from Trapani. San Vito Lo Capo also in the North West for a beach. Segesta for more ruins!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segesta

Ragusa, Modica, Noto etc in the SE are all interesting "hill" towns to explore. The back roads can get quite narrow for vehicles.

The Rough Guide for Sicily use to be quite good for a guide book.

Ortigia near Syracuse for passagiata in the evening, and Caltagirone for the pottery.

There are too many must see places -it is the most amazing place I have been to.
We went & intended to go for 2 weeks but stayed for 6 weeks & still went back for more.
We landed in Messina and worked our way round the island - each town had something to offer. There was a series on tv with Andrew Graham Dixon Georgio Locatelli called Sicily Unpacked which is an excellent introduction to the island.

Highlights for me:
Greek Temples at Aggrigento/Segesta/Selinute
Staying overnight on the car park at top of Mount Etna
Taormina - a bit touristy but the greek theatre frames Etna
Don't miss parking up on the harbour at Ortigia & visiting Syracuse
Palermo - the market - DONT MISS the Palatine Chapel or the puppet shows. - Monreale on the hill (overnight parking with someone to watch over your van)
Worth a trip to Stromboli to see the active volcano
On the North East coast -Erice

The list is endless.....
