Just come back from two months in Greece which was great, parked on the beach on the Peloponnese, swimming in the clear blue sea, eating fresh fish, beautiful.
Now the not so good part, while travelling across Italy to the ferry, I think I was scammed, it happened like this, (I drive a left hand drive Fiat Ducato), driving along the road I noticed a Ford Connect van waiting to pull out of a side road, a couple of minutes later when looking in my mirror I saw it was coming up fast, as it went passed the driver was looking into the van, he pulled straight across me into a layby, not dangerous just quick. As I went past it, there was a bang, then he came along side and forcing me to stop, and insisted that I had hit and broke his mirror, his glass mirror was cracked, but no damage to mine, I'm panicking a bit now, and felt very intimated by it all, I said so what do you want to do, call the police or what, he said, no my wife has a hospital appointment so we can't wait, do you want to pay for the mirror and be done with it, I thought not a bad idea all done and on my way, he looked the price up on ebay 450e+vat straight away I told him to get the police, as I would pay him nothing like that, and anyway I don't carry that sort of money, we eventually agreed that I would pay half, so I followed him to a local bank and got the money out. I paid him 250e, I told him that was my daily withdrawal limit and all that I could give him.
Reason to think I was scammed. I travel on my own and he was having a good look at me as he went passed. The bang, nothing to see on my van. Cracked mirror glass, I must have been travelling at about 40 - 50Km, if I had hit his mirror would there have been more than just the glass broken. Ebay mirror price, looked up the price on my return 150e would be expensive, it was very convenient for him to have that page to refer too. A pregnant wife on the way for an hospital appointment, a good sympathetic angle, and she can't have any delays getting there. Money, he didn't kick up about 250e after demanding 500e+
Perhaps I just should have insisted on the police, I felt quite threatened by it all, and at my age I am not so confident as I used to be, (76 now).
Of coarse the other side of the coin is it's all coincident, and yes I did hit his mirror, and I deserve to pay him compensation, but I just don't think so.
Any thoughts? take care in Italy
