Hello

We always travel on the Eurotunnel but living in Suffolk I have been looking at the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry and from there driving down to Granada. The thought of avoiding the M25 and Dartford crossing is quite appealing but I was wondering what driving from the port in Holland is like and is it a fairy easy route down to, say Lyon, and then cross to Spain as we usually do?

Google maps says the journey is around 300kms longer from Holland compared to Calais - does this sound about right?

Any comments, past experiences or advice would be appreciated on this route.

Many thanks - 4 more weeks and work finishes for a few months (privileges of working at an international school - 8 week summer hols :) Cant wait to hit the road again!!

James.

Good luck.
We did the Hook Ferry donkeys years ago.
With a motorhome, you don't have to be as efficient as a commercial driver.. The more places you visit, the more memories you build.

This is a great service. we are in east Lincolnshire so it makes sense for us. They go overnight so you have to have a cabin. The food in the restaurant is excellent, you get up early and set off on your way by 0900hrs. good motorway links and you are, on holiday, what's the rush? we use it often when going to Lille.

I usually pick ungodly hours to drive to Calais via M25/Dartford crossing/M20/Ferry. The roads are empty enough as to believe I've already hit the French side! Have a rest up at Cite Europe, then onwards and downwards to the promised lands.
Also save £2.50 after 10:00pm on the Dartford Xing! Maybe trivial, but a significant moral victory.

We went Harwich to Hook of Holland on our way out last year. However, our first stop was Utrecht and so that route made sense. (As we live in the South West, we'd normally either take the Chunnel or BF's Plymouth to Roscoff ferry.)

That said, the ferry was excellent; but it's not a quick crossing. We departed Harwich in the early morning and arrived at Hook just in time for the Rotterdam evening rush hour, which was a PITA, but I suspect that won't be so much of an issue for someone heading south.
