Hi all, today i read a thread on ham radios and one chap menthioned rf problems interfiering with his solar panel,i will be fitting both ham radio and solar panel to my camper next year and was thinking of running my coax cable and 12v solar cable into the van through the same water proof cover on the roof of my van,is this a no no and does anyone have advice on stoping this problem, can i solve the problem with ferrite ring ect, cheers Shawbags ( M6 EMS ).

Never had any problems with my Transit or my Talbot (solar panels and CB on both) - didn't know that there could be a prob until you mentioned it. Ignorance is bliss etc?

Hey Shawbags, that is an old callsign, have you always had it or did you inherit? I have used HF in the van with no problems and we have two solar panels on the roof. At least, no problems that I am aware of anyway, receive has always been okay, on occasion it has been poor but moving the van can have a big effect, and I have also used a long wire tied to .......whatever, a tree or a post or anything else, and always got on okay, sometimes on phone, sometimes on key. Not been active for a while now. Have a good Christmas.

I was also unaware of any potential problem. I am intending fitting solar on my Motorhome. I also have a Yeasu FT-847 HF/VHF/UHF rig in the van. I have a gwhip for 80/40/20/10 on a 20ft mast that I carry on the Smart Car trailer and I use that as a mast support. I also have an Atlas20 on a mirror mount which covers all bands fron 70cms to 80. I also have CB onboard.

Forgot my G5RV Full & Half size for use where I can get a wire out. ie. Lakeland Club site at Millom.

Hi norris, even though i have used radio on and off for many years i only passed my foundation licence about 18 months ago, they might be re-useing old call signs.I have only ever heard of this problem once so it might be a one off situation ( RF and solar that is).I am hoping to have my van finished for touring by may and just thought i would ask the question before i start the refit, cheers Shawbags.
P.S i am registered with QRZ.com.

Cheers all, probably nothing to worry about,Shawbags, M6 EMS.

shawbags --- sorry mate, my mistake, I read the callsign as GM6 EMS. My wife and I used to be G6 ZRQ and ZRP, then we became G4 WLX and WLW.

Hi all,
From ex-G6PHP, now G4UXO, really must dust off the Trio HF and fire it up one day - not switched on for a couple of years... thats computers for you I guess. I did once via a huge inverter run my old 101ZD in my Dads boat, good fun talking to America whilst chugging down the river Gt. Ouse!!

eQSO is a good bit of software that allows amateurs to use VOIP and link in with some repeaters. eQSO by M0ZPD Amatuer Radio Internet Linking

I often monitor Room 101ENGLISH on there while on the computer.

EchoLink does the same thing but if you are using WiFi it often blocks the recieve port.

Never had a problem when I had a yacht, used to go /MM

Havn't got round to installing a rig in the MH, but I've used my van, LWB Hightop movano. Brilliant groundplane, MH won't be such a good ground plane

Using a helical whip some 8 ft on top can work most of the world on 10w SSB, done it to VK+ZL, Favourite spot on North Wales coast, park within 3metres of the wet bit, no noise, low angle takeoff etc. If I lob a piece of wire into the wet bit at high tide I can load the prom railings quite well!

Mostly use QRP homebrew equipment
