Habitation door, left or right?

I'm not after another van, but have always wondered how do the vans or rather the people who use them get on with the doors on the wrong side for the uk,
i imagine an open and pray nothing coming type of thing????

and of course what about campsites, cl,cs's etc, who demand you park the right or wrong way round? what do you do?
just thinking, which hurts by the way, before someone else puts it in.

We've got a LHD Kontiki, look in the mirror, if clear crack open door then go if clear or park facing traffic so door is on pavement side.

If traffic is busy, we'll get out of the drivers door. Can't say it's a problem. What about RHD vans on the Continent?? Same issue.

Never been on a site that insists which way you have to park, I think that if they did, it would be goodbye.

we had this dilemma when looking for a MH. In the end we gave up and bought a MH which had the best layout for our needs / whishlist.

Door is on the RHD side BTW. Might be trouble when parking at the road side but at least burglars have to stand in traffic if they want to break in :hammer:

We don't do 'sites' apart from THS so our 'wrong' side door makes no difference.

From what I have read, it is a minority of sites who demand you park to suit them (I may be wrong in the case of the CC though).

Saying that, European vans were all put together because of their hab doors on a C & CC THS at Peebles recently. The THS was run by a regional group who are all caravanners (pardon my French :p).

I don't see it as a problem. Probably safer to get out of the cab doors making good use of the wing mirrors to check nothing is coming in any case.

I don't think there are many sites who would ask you to park the "right" way round? Seems stupid to me, you are going to close the door and curtains anyway when getting dressed, so no big deal.

In any case you can always park facing in or out. I have wilded or camped a few times this year with forum friends and we usually park close with one with one of us facing in and the other out so that our doors actually line up and we can sit in our own vans and chat or string an awning in between... that's the other side of the coin!

i built mine deliberately with the side door on the rhside .so that i can be on the west coast of morocco or portugal reverse to the beach and have sun on the doors side .yet be ready to drive off if i need to easily.
it also suits where i park at home . the left handside is close to the dividing wall on the drive .i can still get past and open the side door. plu abroad its ideal for ease of getting shopping bags in the trailer.

We have a LHD with the habitation door on the "wrong" side for the UK and, like others, do not see it as a problem. When exiting on the road we simply check in the mirror and go - and if we ever pulled into a campsite that insisted we park a certain way round we would move on and find another campsite!

I could well be and often am wrong, but i think I can remember a discussion on a forum where they said they had been on a campsite and they demanded the vans all park facing the same way, also stating the 6mtr rule, as others were using awnings so another awning would contravene this.
we've also enjoyed linking awnings makes for a great big out door party room for many.

Yes, I read that. I think it was a site in Perthshire, and also I read they didn't accept Hobby vans or Caravans because they were favourites of travellers... completely ridiculous.
We've used home made awnings based on bungy chords strung between the vans... only the tyres of the vans are in contact with the ground so it is still "parking" not camping :hammer:

Yes, and you can end up parked next to some right queer folk on these THS's! (Only joking!)

Incidentally, CC actually allow you to park anyway you want as long as you are within the confines of your pitch. We like to park so the awning gets the sun, and if that means side on to the road, so be it, but saying that, last time we used one of their sites is 11 months ago now.

We had a caravan with the door on the 'Drivers Side' and actually found it to be useful when on sites. We would park next to our friends (and their left side van). When we parked the regulation 20ft apart we would create a natural garden betwen the vans. We would sit with our doors facing each other, both having full access to our vans. Had it been on the other side, we would have to choose between who's van we would site outside off.

Our motorhome is again a Drivers side opening. Mainly because we like the European build quality against the British stuff, but we have never had any problems.

I've had vans with left & right & to be honest its never been a problem.
