Orkney wild
Hi grenlyn. I live in my van and visit mainland Orkney quite often. Unless you've booked onto a site well in advance there's not much hope of getting on one as they are quite small. Not to worry though, there's plenty of places to wild camp, and the locals dont seem to mind. I often stop on the car park at the Brough of Birsay or next to the loo's at the beach at Evie. My favorite place is at the old wartime gun emplacements at Yesnaby where there's a view down the coastal cliffs of Hoy. I've had some great times there, the place can fill up with walkers cars though. If its full, just come back at six or so in the evening and you should have the place to yourself. I haven't checked the ferry prices lately, but the ferry from Gills Bay near John O Groats that goes to St Margarets Hope in Scappa flow is usually cheaper than the one that goes from Scrabster (Thurso) to Stromness. Hope this helps, have a great time there.
P.S. If you are heading for Applecross on the way home you may find that a lot of the wild camping spots near there are taken up due to the recent telly programme about the place. (Locals recon that the website of the pub at Applecross had 3000 enquiries about accomodation in the first hour after the first tv programme). You might like to stop at Shieldaig (it will be the second Sheildaig you come to if you are heading down the coastal road from north to south). Its about twenty five miles from Applecross and has a basic campsite with an honesty box for donations. The locals are friendly, the pub is great, the view is fantastic. Was there last week, was blissed out.
