hello all.... and happy new year.... I have done yet another stupid thing.... I have a plastic jerry can in a floor locker which has an electric pump in it and pumps clean fresh drinkable water to a separate tap on my sink. about 2 months back the pump failed and I took the jerry can out and left it in the garden with no lid on it.... doh ... so green slime has accumulated in the bottom and I am trying to clean it out to reuse it and then have another pump fitted. the green slime has gone with boiling water - but there are brown marks in the bottom which I cannot reach.

it is a really awkward size and just fits into the cupboard so it is not going to be easy to replace.

any ideas on what to use to get rid of these marks ? thanks

May be Milton baby bottle solution will sort it out, you may have to get a brush with along handle or attach a brush to a piece of wood to get to the stains.

maybe add some dried rice and a litre of hot water put lid on and give a dam good shake. The rice should act as an abrasive and remove the brown marks. You could use sand with the water but that may scour the plastic. Experiment.

I seem to recall that Spigot (I think it was) had a very clean cassette after using Bio washing liquid in it. Maybe worth sloshing some about and leaving a couple of days?

What colour plastic was the jerrycan? Was it translucent or dark coloured? The translucent versions ie white opaque plastic promote the growth of green algae, the black or dark ones inhibit growth. For future reference try to cover it up with 2 layers of black bin bags or keep it out of bright areas. The darker the green the more light it has been exposed to.
Try cheap cola first to clean it out.

Been there, done that!

Mild bleach solution overnight, then rinse thoroughly.

so thats how they make brown rice, always wondered.

use some milton tablets and let them sit for a few days in the water, the stain doesnt matter its killing the bacteria that counts,
Happy new year back Andy
