I am interested in going to Greece next year via Slovenia,Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania instead of using the Italy Greece / ferry system, I understand that somewhere through the route you need to obtain vehicle insurance and is there anything else you require, your assistance and information would be most gratefully recieved.
Thank you.

Can't remember where but 5 years ago the border insurance was only 3rd party and our Breakdown insurance didn't cover us either in some of those countries and there was extra to pay on Van ins for some of the route. So the ferry from Venice has been a cheaper option for us since

Many thanks, I will look into this route, thought this had restrictions on time of year

Probably not taking passenger bookings at this time but it carries a lot of Commercial vehicles so I'd have thought it runs year round. But what you may have heard is they only take bookings for camping on board where you have access to your van to eat an sleep during summer months out of the summer period you have a cabin as normal

I have never heard of a border bought Insurance giving anything more than the basic cover for the country you are entering.
Check your own policy and if they will give you a green card.
Albania looks to be the only one in your list that could ge a problem, though I know you can buy cover at the border.

I've driven to bulgaria and back and went into slovenia by mistake missed garage to get vignette - stopped by police less than a kilometer in and i had other country vignettes in window so was not trying to dodge buying them - silly costly mistake 180 euros for vignette + fine

This route appeals to me
need to check on insurance and breakdown and breakdown cover for Serbia and North Macedonia both of which may be OK for both
Will probably vary from insurer to insurer as will breakdown

From Hungary you could also go via Romania and Bulgaria thus avoiding Serbia North Macedonia (and Albania)

Thank you, this route looks very interesting also the alternative via Romania and Bulgaria

Rottiontour posted his routes to Greece from his home in Germany listing stops he used

A couple of years ago, we drove through Slovenia and Croatia and hoped to drive through Bosnia. Insurance for Slovenia and Croatia was included in our policy but Bosnia was not and my Insurance company (Safeguard) would not issue a green card for Bosnia. I was reluctant to take out local insurance at the border because I don't like buying insurance in a language I can't understand and it would only have been third party anyway. Thus we visited Bosnia by coach tours from Croatia! Don't know about Albania but if you look at your policy it will tell you which countries you are covered for and for those that you are not you can ask whether your Insurance company will issue a green card.

We have, however, travelled overland to Greece using only EU countries - for which we are covered (Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria)

Catherine is there now isn’t she, I know she mentioned the route you said Ken but not sure if they were going in one way and out the other. Surprised she hasn’t seen this thread

edit: @Clunegapyears

We drove overland to Greece a few years ago - France,Belgium,Germany,Austria,Slovenia,Hungary,Romania,Bulgaria and then into Greece. Roads weren’t too good in Romania and Bulgaria but we survived. For the return journey we took the ferry from Patras to Venice and then dawdled back through Italy and France. Great trip.

Happy travels,

Pat

I went to Greece last year into Bosnia from Croatia which was a joke at the border. I pulled up at the kiosk just to have a burly looking chap give me a look as if what are you stopping for then slid his window aside and waved me through with his thumb lol. Stayed at Mostar in the car park near Bridge i couldn't wish for a better place with electric and key for toilet shower expensive at 30 euro also cars were packed in around me like sardines so you have to it it out a while the next morning before you can get out lol. Drove south and back out into Croatia were at the border they were very thorough. Montenegro incredibly busy, Albania check documents same into Greece. I never had to pay any extra insurance costs but did notify my insurance company who issued a green card to cover the duration of my travels allowing for a few weeks either side of my planned journey. Returned Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia obviously make sure you have paid road tax at each border and leave headlights on while driving and all is good.

Many thanks for all your posts, this has been very interesting and has given me a lot to think about, will now spend some time processing this information.
Once again many thanks.
Stay safe and happy

May I suggest you visit the sister site 'Motorhomer' and send a pm to a full member called 'peejay' (Pete and Jan).

Pete has travelled most routes to Greece and Turkey, and is well aware of insurance problems.

He and his wife are really nice people, very helpful, and will almost certainly respond to any pm with good advice.
