Hello all, hope the sunshine (or lack of) is treating you well. We have been travelling in Greece for 2 weeks now, having made our way down through Italy, we have to say that the Camperstop book has been a fantastic source of information and would be thoroughly recommended.
We don't know how much hype there is about the current situation in Greece in the UK press at the moment but we thought we could throw some light on how the circumstances are out here.
We made our way over courtesy of Anek lines, taking the Ancona, Igoumenitsa route. We drove to the port and picked up our tickets from here, nice and easy, you just have to walk around the different vendors and get the best price offered. This cost us €380 for an open return off peak. Our van is a small Nissan Vanette Cargo conversion which measures just under 2 meters in height and 4.5 metres in length. Ferry crossing time was 18hours. The ferry departs daily at 1.30. It is advisable to arrive at around 7am to catch the ferry on the same day if you have not booked tickets. The ferry was fantastic, we had open deck, which we had to wait at the port an extra day for. Open deck enables you to stay in your camper for the duration of the crossing, the ferry also has free showers which were better than any that we have encountered at campsites up until now! Wifi is available at 2 hours for €3 onboard.
Having said that we have been informed by other travellers that the ferry prices have almost doubled in the last year since the companies have been sold off to British and Italian firms.
The Greek people are as famously hospitable as ever, tavernas are reasonably priced, averaging at about €8 for a large main course. Drink prices are cheaper than in Italy around €2.50 for a pint and €1.50 for a soft drink such as coke.
Petrol can vary, depending on location but the petrol stations are fairly prolific. You will be looking at around €1.50 per litre as an average price for diesel.
Campsites are reasonably priced, mainly on the €15 mark, we have been informed by other campers that these rates have gone down in the past year, one campsite was €15 per night in comparison to €28 a few years previously.
We have not encountered any problems with the Greek people and have found them to be most welcoming. We are not one for spreading scare stories however we have been advised by other wildcampers to make sure that we stay with at least one other motorhome.
Most of all, please, please come and visit this beautiful, welcoming country, do not let the news put you off, the people are fantastic and in desperate need of a boost right now and tourist money can help contribute to that. Just saying
