Fylde welcomes motorhomers

Motorhome owners will be welcome in St Annes when Fylde Council opens one of its seafront car-parks to overnight visitors this spring.

The prosperous motorhomers will be able to stay for up to three nights in a pilot scheme that will last to the end of summer.

The car-park chosen is the one at the rear of St Annes swimming pool – selected as it offers good sea views while not being visible from the road.

Councillor Albert Pounder, Fylde Council cabinet member for Customer and Operational Services, said: “Motorhomers are good, responsible citizens and tend to be prosperous.

“Many come at the moment but they have to go home at the end of the day. From this spring they will be able to make a weekend of their visit and, we expect, they will spend money in shops, cafes and restaurants.

“They tend to be people who have good disposable incomes – exactly the sort of people we need for the tourism business in the area.

“In France, many towns have ‘aires’. They are places where motorhomers can stay overnight and they typically have electricity hook-ups and running water. You can drive from one end of France to the other by staying in aires.

“Fylde will be one of the first places in England to have one of these continental-style areas and we know there is already interest within the motorhoming community.”

The swimming pool car-park will not have electricity and water hook-ups. If this summer’s trial is a success, such facilities will be considered for future years – as will possible use of other car-parks. Caravans will continue to be banned.

Behaviour will be monitored while charges for overnight stays are yet to be decided. A three-night limit will be imposed to protect local hoteliers.

Councillor Pounder added: “There has been a problem in recent years with motorhomes parking on the roads which is suitable for neither residents nor motorhomers.

“We hope this trial period will make a positive out of a negative – we can get them off the road while using one of our existing assets at no cost to the Council Tax-payer.

“Motorhoming has grown very fast in recent years and we want Fylde to be at its forefront.”

at least he's honest about why motorhomes are restricted

I can't see, how he is protecting the hoteliers, having MH's there or not will do nothing to the hoteliers income.

I would not go to that area and purchase a hotel room, I have a motorhome, so they will never get my money, however if I like the area, and I tell others how nice it is, (many of my friends are non MH'ers) they may decide to visit in a hotel.

If I am not allowed to stay overnight then I would not discuss the area and would probably actively discourage people on visiting

PS my father had a hotel in Blackpool many years ago

I'd say a meet sometime is in order.....and....some of us should perhaps for good measure approach some of the hotels in the area for a free overnight stay in the car park and make a point of socialising in the hotel and perhaps buying a meal or a breakfast. Seems to me that if this is done then the hotels will be positive about the new facility too as it's also bringing them business.

Sounds good to me. It's not an area that I had considered visiting before, but will definitely look at it now.

If we have to pay a modest charge for safe parking up to three nights then I have no objection to that. And a swimming pool on the doorstep as well.

Let's hope other areas see this and join in.

This is the post code if you want to google.FY8 1SW

Did have a look last year and think this is the car park (but not 100% sure) but it is at the back of the swimming baths.

I suspect a number of other Councils will be watching with interest.
If Lytham make a success of it ie bring in extra trade for the area and gain income from parking charges, without incurring significant disruption, it could be the beginning of a boom in English Aires.....fancy that!

Sorry Basildog this is the post code FY8 1SW.

A three-night limit will be imposed to protect local hoteliers.

I agree with Steco1958 here. This is irrelevant to hoteliers. Motorhomers will not use hotels whatever, but those staying longer may well patronise hotels for food or drinks if open to non-residents therefore representing extra income for the area.

This aire will likely be pay and display. If a charge is made, I don't think there is any unwritten expectation that the motor-homes will patronise local facilities, though undoubtedly they will, whether a charge is made or not.

this is good news lets hope other councils follow suit, letts hope the cost reflects that there are no faccilities apart from overnight parking.

Lets hope Scarborough councillors read this, especially the bit about responsible motorhomers with spending money.

In your dreams. Tourist prevention officers. And before anyone asks, Just outside Scarborough is my official residence, electoral role etc etc...Red Rum,s blinkers were nothing compared to this inept waste of space., but when councillors have vested interest in formal campsites, I shall let you draw your own conclusions

St Annes

i was at St Anne's last weekend and it is really lovely and chilled. The council are very brave and forward-thinking. I look forward to taking my new van up there and soaking up the Lancastrian coastline and local food and beer x

i have emailed SBC with the Flyde link they dont take any notice, like Channa says, one of the councillors owns camspsites so theres no way they will back anything like this, i will go where i feel welcome and i will spend my hard earned cash there too, Scarborough i'm afraid is not on my list this year, its a real shame because in my opinion, Scarborough is one of my fave places but my last few visits i have felt like a leppar :mad1:
