Hi peeps,
finally bought a used M/H today. It's a 1994 autotrail apache, should do us nicely.
As a first timer, I want to be able to watch telly. I appreciate that there are a lot of threads concerning t.v. in motorhomes. However if someone can help me by letting me know exactly what I need to purchase and install to allow me to watch t.v. in the van. There is an arie fitted on the roof already, with a co-ax into the living aea. I do not have SKY at home only cable (virgin).
I will be picking the M/H up in two weeks.:)All help is appreciated.

Hi and well done on your purchase. The aerial on top might not be Digital ready so check it out. I got a Satelite system from Aldi £ 50-00. Works brill and has more channels than freeview. Only take 5 mins to set up when you get used to it. I have the dish fixed on the back on top of my ladders, Cant fault it really.
Good luck with it . have you give it a name yet?? Dont forget to post some pics and show it off.:D:D

Great idea to fix the dish on the ladder at the back.

I never got round to this in the end.

i bought mine from road pro for 4 times that ...more hassle than it was worth
now for sale on e-bay !

Many thanks for your replies... quick or what....
Wifey is already looking at changing upholstery etc. I intend to retro fit leccy windows and remote central locking, this is simple to do as I have already fitted these to my classic mini's. The t.v. system for the M/H however is baffling me... so much jargon out there. For instance what exactly does "Freesat" mean?

satellite tv which is free from subscription. You need a dish, a decoder preferebly 12v and satfinder and tv. roadpro do a catalogue which you might find explain things a bit better . i cant be arsed messing about with it myself

If your in the UK your current aerial might work with a freeview set, I bought a cheap one from Comet that will run off 12 volts, I bought a 12volt amperor regulated supply to be on the safe side but for year I just ran my old telly direct from the 12 volts. I don't have a aerial fixed on the roof I just have a cheap indoor one that works fine.
Once you get in Europe (unless you are around the Calais - Bolougne area you won't get UK TV unless you have a satellite. You can pay a fortune for some of the self seeking ones depending what you want or you can do like most & get a cheap suitcase type one for around £50 or less. With this you can pick up all the UK channels plus loads more, all the way down to the south of France. Once you get to Spain you start to loose some the further you go down but you can still get all the radio stations.
The cheap satellite systems can be a bit fiddly to get to work as you will see by the number of people who can't seem to get them working but once you get the 'knack' it is really simple. If I can't get a signal within 2 or 3 mins (this is after I have plugged everything in) then something is wrong. There are plenty of posts on this & other websites about setting up TV's.

Good luck with your van, it's great getting away from it all.

read a book!!!! b**ox to tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Easy answer is plug in a 12v or mains (provided you have hook-up) TV to the aerial for analogue. For Freeview same thing - just need a decoder.
What I've done is get a USB TV digital stick for my laptop - that works well. You would just need to put the aerial into the USB stick to make it work. You'll only get freeview with that - no sat channels.
