Google maps OFFLINE

I didn't try it out yet but with gmapcatcher - Project Hosting on Google Code
it seems possible to store maps on your laptop and have a look at it off-line (= without internet). It take some time to upload the maps but they say that afterwards it should be fast.
Maybe a trick for Chris (Canalsman)

Works quite well except that the Windows installer falls over on the 64bit version of Windows 7. Seems slower on my laptop though its got a faster processor than my main Pc.

I've just been playing with mapcatcher. Downloaded the map of Europe and found that with being offline its possible to zoom in to different countries. Handy piece of kit when touring or planning a trip, no internet conection to worry about and no need to buy a map for every country.
