Google maps are handy but: online. You got to have an internet connection to get them.
There is a free program to capture Google maps offline and store them as images on your hard drive:

Didn’t try it out but this seems to be handy unless you have enough room on your harddisk. Maybe you can put them on a USB stick or an SD card
