Going to toilet

New to this forum so if this has been answered before, apologies.
We are setting off to tour Europe at the end of Feb 09 in our Cheyenne. My problem is the toilet. :confused:
Where do you empty it? Does it freeze up? Is it better to go in the bushes?
Does anyone know where you can buy bags to line the toilet and dispose of in bins?:confused:

If you dispose of it in bins, you will end up getting arrested - it is a health hazard and pity the poor worker that has to empty the bin. :eek:

In France you will see signs everywhere showing a symbol for dumping greywater - very often a fibreglass box with a grate that offers fresh water as well as grey water and sewerage disposal.

In the other european countries they are less frequent. You can empty the cassette at public toilets. We tend to only use the cassette if we have to (make a habit of using toilets at service areas or other rest stops). If you are crapping into the cassette it is a good idea not to put toilet paper into it if you want to empty it easily into a toilet pan. Simply deposit the paper into a plastic bag and seal it - get rid of it when you can also in a public toilet.

Most campsites that accept motorhomes will usually have facilities for disposal.
 
I had to return to this because I don.t know the answer to one of your queries and now it bothers me enough to seek opinions from elsewhere. Over Christmas we were in the Ukraine and the outside temperature dropped to -20C. We had not washed for days and the van was taking on a rather pungent aroma as a result. Water tanks were all drained and anything outside such as the electric step was completely frozen up. We had only been able to find butane gas mix so even internal heat was not an option - we depended on our goose down duvet for survival and drew lots to see who suffered the unspeakable agonies of making tea in the morning.

Despite all the above, the contents of our cassette did not freeze. I speculated that maybe the salt in the urine prevented it, or maybe the chemicals - in short, I don't know.

Any opinions or factual knowledge on the forum?:confused:
 
toilet

we done 2 weeks wild camping in scotland last year & did not go into a campsite at all.
we emptied our toilet in public toilets whether it was full or not , that way we were ok if we did not find one (public toilet) for a bit.
a lot of toilets have an outside water tap so we also filled with water that way.
we are going back to scotland this year & will do the same again.
i suppose toilet waste dont freeze otherwise you would be going around with a lump of ice in your body or would your body heat keep it from freezing ? just a thought.

I can't see a problem with depositing a sealed bag into a rubbish bin, people get rid of disposable nappies and bags containing dog poo this way. Surely it's less of a health hazard than leaving it behind the bushes for your child/pet to stumble across.
 
In France the Aires des Camping Cars have facilities for emptying grey water and chemical toilet, and usually to replenish fresh water (sometimes for a fee)
Please, I would hope that, as responsible Wilcampers/Motorhomers you do not even think about disposing of toilet waste in anything other than Public Toilets or Aires. Disposing of such waste in litter bins is not only anti social but can lead to bad feelings towards Motorhomers/Campers.

Could be the ammonia content in pee, ammonia doesn't freeze until -80 degrees (I think or thereabouts)
 
Try vacarious books website, they sell various books listing all the aires in France and some in other countries.They are in French but easily translated. They also sell one in english called "all the aires in France.

i suppose you could always use the dog waste bins provided not too much difference in both kinds of waste
 
Toilet !!

Hi everyone,
Two things we've done to aleviate toilet emptying problems when we are on the continent..or anywhere for that matter when we are wildcamping. Firstly we had a 'sog' system fitted to the cassette, so we no longer use chemicals of any kind..this means we are able to empty our waste in ordinary toilets. Secondly, I bought a spare cassette off eBay, which we carry in case of emergencies, as the full cassette is sealed, it would travel happily in the underfloor locker till we found a suitable emptying point.
I can confirm that there are Aires des Service in or around every town, and almoist every village of any size in France, and Stellplatz in Germany...Don't worry, you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip.;)

At least I don't have to cross my legs for 2 years.:D

As previously said - France is easy pee-zy. Spain and Portugal is a little more difficult but public loos, garages and motorway services all usually have taps as well. Fill up with fuel and ask to use their loos or top up with water. We have never been refused. Try to stay as topped up as possible in case you get to a difficult place. Same with disposal. Wouldn't be without our second cassette. :rolleyes:

The other thing that will happen is that you will find loads of other campers along the way and they will soon tell you where the local 'spots' are for such conveniences.

I think the thing we have learnt most to overcome is to not be embarressed about it. Everyone has to pee and poo. We motorhomers are just a little weird as we store it up for a while and then want a BIG dump :eek: ;)

Certainly true that they exist, but we found that even the ones that were open during winter had frozen taps and drains - not that it stopped many RVers from dumping their cassette regardless. Many were overflowing with two or three layers of effluent all frozen and waiting for the next thaw. Goodness knows how the poor maintenance men deal with it.

Come to think of it - the problem is not confined to winter either. In many of the token-operated water and dump points we came across last summer, the cassette dump was choked solid because people were too lazy or miserable to get a token to operate the flush water. Won't take too much of that sort of lack of consideration for the facilities to be withdrawn.
 
Just travel with a pig.

Years ago I rented a shack on the beach in Goa, India.

No toilet, but a very nice chubby pig who would follow us into the scrub at the back of the beach. Very hygienic. Not a snapper or a piece of toilet paper in sight.

I never ate pork (I hope) in India.

Yep its true I was there in 1979, stayed in Goa on the beach and the rooms had a toilet with a shute and when you .....:eek: within a minute or two the pigs would be there .................. It was the cleanest beach in India.:confused:
