Ok fonts of all knowledge, I'd like to get an idea on the pros and cons of the Gaslow system - not the product as such but how well (or otherwise) it works with refilling at Autogas pumps, any problems with appliances, did appliances need rework after installation, etc. I DONT need to know about the plastic clips that broke :)

As far as refilling, Gaslow system is no different to any fixed tank, especially if the fill point is on the outside of the vehicle. You will need three different adaptors but even then I found a couple of pumps in Spain that needed different fittings. Didn't matter because most of them have a selection inside at the counter.

Some advantages - never a problem deciding when to fill up. Just do it any time you think you need at least 5 Litres because that is often the minimum payment. If you have two bottles then just refill one within a few days of it running empty.

Never problems removing bottles and refitting heavy ones. No problems with defective valves or damaged threads and leaks.

Disadvantages - if you are unlucky in your timing, you might end up with a tank full of autogas that contains 50% butane and if you then spend time in freezing conditions, you might end up with half a tank of Butane which won't evaporate. Easily rectified by keeping the tank full.

Scandinavia and Spain - you have to actively seek out filling stations because they can be few and far between. Many require a chipped credit card because they are not manned.
Iceland has no Autogas and neither has Morocco. Iceland was no problem because we filled the 40 litre tank in Bergen and that lasted nearly a month until we got to Scotland. Morocco - needed an adaptor and fitted an extra regulator and valve and just bought a local bottle and kept exchanging it. Brought a full one back to use as an emergency and on the last trip ran it empty and replaced it with a 1 euro consignment Carryfour bottle. (you won't be able to do that because your gas locker will have the gaslow bottles in it.

Never been queried about filling up - probably because the fill point is not inside the gas locker.

Make sure you turn off the gas valve before refilling.

Forgot. ALL my appliances are rated for either 100% propane all the way through to 100% butane and the correct regulator was also fitted. I understand many UK vehicles may need at least a different regulator, even if not needing rejettting the appliances.

Our van has a gas locker that takes 11kg bottles. It will not take the 13kg size.
The main supplier around Suffolk is Calor (13 or 6kg bottles) or Flogas (11kgs)
If I go down to the Farm we are on BP; again 11kg-but no suppliers of this size near us in Suffolk
When we go over to Euroland there are different sizes, different regulators etc
So we got Gaslows* and have not regretted it one bit.

There is also the Alugas system and that seems to be just as useful

I have had my single 6kg gaslow bottle for over 3 years now, have never run out, so why buy two, you only have one petrol/diesel tank, just fill it up directly the guage starts to move from the full position as it only registers after bottle is 50% empty, the instructions tell you this.
Highly recommended:have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun:

I've had gaslow bottles for nearly 4 years now and it's great, no lugging heavy bottles anymore, never had any problems with appliances at all.

John.

Hi I had 2 11 ltr Autogas bottles fitted in our Hymer over a year ago, never had a problem. I use gas all the time when wilding for the fridge and hot water, never run out yet bottles have guages so I can judge when to fill up

Cheers

Gaslow.... great, becareful where you have it fitted though.. When I first bought my mhome it was fitted incorrectly... Now im not a gas engineer but I could tell that it wouldnt work, and this was fitted by an approved dealer!

Please note.. I have tried to fill up in switzerland, they have yet another system for refulling. Phoned Gaslow to report, so it looks as though we may have to buy another adaptor, in addition to the other three..

I have nothing but praise for the Gaslow system. The initial cost is high but ours paid for itself within 18 months (we are in the van virtually full-time) and we have not had any problems filling up in most countries (even in Spain where fittings can be very variable but where the staff at the filling area will always bend over backwards to make sure they can find a suitable adaptor).

Trouble free for me too both in UK and Europe. I have 1x 11Kg Gaslow and 1x 11Kg Orange non refillable. The Orange bottle is simply as back up if needed which it never has been. A fill with LPG seems to last ages except in the middle of winter, just watch the gauge as reported already because it is non-linear (doesn't move from full position until half empty).

Get one (or 2) you won't regret it if you're keeping the van.

Just to add that the system is transferable from van to van. We have our filler on the inside of the gas locker so transferring it would be very easy. Even if you have an external filler, you could buy a small piece of plastic to block it off. On the other hand, the presence of the system might be a good selling point!

We had gaslow fitted after having to cut short our planned five week holiday to Ireland when we discovered their gas bottles fittings are unique to Ireland with no UK adaptors and they wouldn’t even take our UK ones in exchange.
No problems with appliances (spent 3 weeks over Christmas in Scotland in -16C)
Just come back from five weeks in Italy via France with no problem – lots and lots of filling stations in Italy. You just need a France adaptor and an ‘Other European’ adaptor - Simples

Good point. Gaslow do a brass blanking cap which screws on to the inside of the filler so it can be left as an option for the next owner.
