"Gasing" urban fairy tale?

Met a not so jolly chap on Redcar seafront, as we both paid for a car parking ticket. He said "mines the MH" I replied that I too had a MH-a Hymer!

Anyway I asked if he wilded? "oo no to dangerous! people get gased you know!", I said I had heard of it in France and Spain, "happens everywhere, has happened in Scotland, people past a tube into the MH and then fill the MH with knock out gas!!"

"ooo" was my reply

"then they break in and rob you!"

I made my exit at this point as Pacito's (lush ice cream) was open and their ice cream was calling me.

So urban fairy tale?? down too to much drink?? or has it really happened??

I forget which magazine, author or recognised body I gleaned this from, but they to had heard of this.

As an investigative article they contacted relevant insurance companies, constabularies/gandarmeries, foreign judicial systems etc.

Turns out not one had any records for such events! Urban myth me thinks?:D

Its been debated before but its a good one,

I have never actually met ot spoken to anyone who has had this happen to them, plenty who heard of someone on a forum who knew someone etc etc

The abilty to pass a tube into a MH and inject enough gas to have any effect is something thats just beggers belief, many cite they put it though the fridge vent but how can it them circulate before it either drops out the bottom or out through some other hole in the van ?????, funny how know one has actually died as doing this in a hospital is a precise thing that takes years of training.

Has anyone asked how much it would cost to gas a van, I bet its not cheap, if all you might get is a wallet an lcd telly and maybe a laptop at best would you bother doing this????

I work in the transport industry at a resonably high level, lorrys are often cited as victims in the 'stories' we have over 500 trunk vehicles on the road each night in the UK and have never had this happen in 40 years nor have we been advised by the police this is a danger that we need to be aware of, TBH theives cut the sides of our lorries and nick half the contents whilst the drivers are sleeping without any help from any added drugs :D :D

For me its an urban mith started one day by someone who was broken into and could not accept the fact it happened or left the door open and would have invaludated their insurance to admit it. :D:D

I will now get gassed the next time I go out :(

I remember this being bandied about a while ago on various forums. One forum member who was an anaesthetist reckoned that the amount of gas needed to fill a van though a small tube would take all night to "deliver", then there is the correct mixture to calculate, cost of the gas, ect. etc.

Some alarm manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon pretty quickly though :)

As biggirafe says, it has always happened to someone who knows a bloke in the pubs third cousin.........

Is this not similar to what the Russian Special Forces tried a few years ago during the school hostage situation

It went terribly wrong :(

Spoke to an operating theatre technician and he said did not know of any gas that would do the job as like he said would just disipate and to get a mixture just right would be almost impossible !!!! He was a fellow motorhome owner and it just happened to be something everyone was talking about at the time .
A friend of mine discussed the 'gassing' claims with a consultant anaesthetist a few years ago, he commented that as far as he knew there was no research on the effect of anaesthetic gasses on people who were already asleep. He admitted it was possible that even very low concentrations might have some effect in inducing a deeper sleep.

I know people who have had their vans broken into whilst they were asleep, however none have claimed to have been 'gassed'.

Anectode:
5 years ago I overnighted in Sweden on one of these E6 'Rastplasser' towards Norway (not my attitude, but I was too tired to go on). A few meters away was this Italian MH'r. Pattati patatta..... In the morning: great alarm. Italiano was gassed , burglared, you name it ! Police came by. Italiano 'niente comprende' , maybe that belgian could translate ? OK , I did.
Came out this spaghetti consumed all of his wine and liquour the evenening before fearing the Norwegian tolls.
Gassed, no way; only a hangover and not aware where he puts his keys or shut the door or what he was doing. But gassed: he sure was !:p

This has been debated before and people who should know better bought gas alarms.

I have also heard these stories and would concur them to be just that, however i remember 2 years ago at a motorhome show being told by a fellow and his wife(who were on the gas lo site flogging their systems) that they had been gased and the whole place stripped whilst at sleep in their beds,i was reluctant to believe then or now and feel that you are more likely to be killed than gassed.

does happen in lorrys with there more confined cabs usually its easy start which is sprayed into the cab through the air vents..never heard of it happening in a MH or caravan.

Can of Worms :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
dont ask about trailers:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I was with my anaesthetist for a pre-op examination and raised the subject
he asked ...how many people have they found dead ?
when I said none that I knew of , he said impossible then , even with precisely measure amounts people die

And of course they know exactly which anaethetic gas to use and they will be cheap no doubt. A screwdriver in a lock will cost nothing so quick buy your gas meter for every known anaesthetic known to man.
It's scary outside kids, better stay at home.

Never has anyone posted first hand that this has happened. A better chance of seeing the Indian Rope Trick!

Hi can you state your source for this, I'm not trying to be a pain but if there is a valid source for this fact I'd like to know of it :)

as per my previous post :-

Absolute rubbish. The stuff stinks to high heaven, even if the driver was asleep the smell would awaken him or her and how many cans would you need to knock someone out sat or lying in a cab? And the stuff is used to help start engines, you fill a cab with that stuff, cause a spark and the resultant explosion would be heard in the next county.

This ought to settle it

What drivel it happened it was in motorhome magazines and someone told me down the pub. I've slept in a respirator for the past three years and sleep during the day while wide awake standing to all night. You'll be safe to sleep while i'm around, just don't touch my machine gun ok?
