You are using liquid Petrolium Gas (LPG). If you use your van at temperatures below the freezing point of water Butane will not turn into gas but stays as a liquid in the bottle. Propane continues to turn to gas to 20 below freezing for water.

The butane gas will not clog your pipes any more than Propane,

if you don't motorhome in low temperatures butane is better because it has a much higher calorific value per unit volume than propane

your equipment is designed to run on either or a mixture thereof , so you can swop at any time

i only ever use butane and i can honestly say i've had no probs!

Butane is fine for the summer, but definitely propane if you're out in the cold. Or Scotland...:D

There are little 12V gas pipe block heaters available to solve the problem of gas freezing in the pipe before the regulator.

butane

If you use your motorhome in Autumn or Winter then you need propane. Don't be fooled by the calorific value as you also have different pressures to take into account. I have been out to change customers over this winter as the butane would not vapourise in the low temperatures.

clogging to me suggests a blockage....for the record no blockage as such will occur.

the two main gases are butane and propane.

Butane in cold temperatures around zeroish has a problem turning to gas which is why propane is used. It will gas well below zero if you are camping in the winter months.

If you are camping in the warmer months , then there is no problem with butane ( calor blue) however if you intend to camp during the colder months then propane (red bottles are the answer).

This is a practical rule , in terms of keeping things tickety boo !!.

butane v propane bang for bucks in a normal plus temperature I dont have a clue, I suspect if cold weather isnt imminent butane is more efficient in the heat it can provide ?

Just changed our system to propane ( red cylinders ), today.

Out over the weekend and found our butane (blue ) cylinders very sluggish to get going until about mid-morning due to the cold overnight temperature, and this was with a good half a cylinder still left.

It's not very nice to have to wait until nearly dinner time for your morning cuppa, and no heating either, had to run the van engine!

You watch we'll have a summer with temperatures in the mid forties now and I'll have to go back to blue cylinders again!

having lived in my van for a while in below zero temps and scotland this xmas just gone i still had no problems with butane!.

I think you were lucky  as we have seen many vans with frozen butane.
Can I ask why you stayed on butane and not changed to propane?

Another two questions

Where is your bottle located?
Does it get any protection by being in a locker inside the van body?

because it is now so cheap and easy to get gas in mainland europe I no longer carry 2 full sized bottles , but an 11Kg repsol propane and a camping gas 907 as emergency reserve adapted to the normal european thread [ like calor dumpy butane ]

because the gas truck didn't turn out in the recent snowstorm hit the costa brava ,and I didn't want to move , when I ran out I switched to the camping gas [ which I had wrapped up in an old sweater after seeing the weather forecast ] and that worked the heating just fine
oh , in the outside gas locker of my A class hymer , sure it wouldn't have worked outside at 5 C below

Just to confirm some previous posts...
I had been obliged this winter to wild for 2 weeks (Spouse in hospital:mad:) in Southern France .

When looking for gas supply I found the following advice at filling stations selling gas:

Butane - for indoor use
Propane - for outdoor use

In my earlier life (sailing at the med. coast) I made the experience that butane (e.g. blue Camping Gas) bottles won't work under 7 deg. cent.

By the way: I paid as deposit for a 11/13 kgs bottle at supermarket filling stations EURO 1,-- (CASINO) or EURO 5,-- (LECLERC). Of course you would need an adaptor to calor gas. I do have one to the Gearman gas bottles.
Content har been araound EUR 18,-- per 13 kg ( End Dec/Beg. Jan )

in answer to you ***** i had butane bottles and reg. so used them never felt the need to change:) but if i do get problems then i will know whats wrong (hopefully)

is propane cheaper than butane???

to you john, i have a well secured locker at rear quarter of my van (ldv convoy)metal door to the outside and the bottles(2x13kg)are stored inside.the lockers lined with board and sealed and then theres the insulation between the bodywork and boarding out.

my gas pipe is internal and less than 1mtr long

€5 otto ? daylight robbery
and with lpg costing an average of 70 cents now in france a 13Kg refillable bottle would cost €18, so no saving on just swopping the bottle looking at the price you paid ; waste of money therefore in france

of course you could fill your 13Kg bottle in spain for about €14 at the pump I visited ....however you can swop your repsol bottle for €12 !!!!!! you can get a free bottle and adaptor at any repsol agent in southern france
?
and n8rbos ...about the same price

why would anyone buy refillable bottles unless they stay in the uk ? and is there no way that you can get propane in bottles with the standard thread I mentioned before , or maybe there is an adaptor to that thread

btw , I paid €1 for a 9Kg propane bottle at intermarche ...standard thread of course

Ive got a LPG tank fitted to my van being, disabled it is easier for me just to fill up at the LPG pumps at most petrol stations. I don`t have to lift heavy gas cylinders, also it has freed up my gas bottle locker on my motor home for extra storage.
