gas bottle / system...........

Hi, we seem to have a problem with the Gas system on our 1989 ( French ) Pilote R800 which we got last year and all was well with fridge / hob supply wise, now having changed the gas cylinder ( same type as last year ) the gas keeps turning itself off, i or if you want to use two burners it goes off, have tried another new cylinder with the same results, Traced what could be the problem by turning the manual gas control valve ( under sink ) halfway and as the knob is sprung loaded to either be on or off i had to tape it to stay in the halfway position, but i agree this is only a temp - repair, i was wondering if any of you out there have had the same problem and if so what did you do to correct this....?
Many thanks for any answers you can give us.........

Gas problem.................

yep decided as an engineer i should workout the problem myself, right as the camper was made in 1989 the auto-shut off inline valve is not only way past its sell by date but the pressure over here ( France ) in the gas bottles in the last year or two have been much lower, have no idea why, but we have noticed our kitchen gas cooker burners are not so powerful as they used to be, plus now have heard others saying the same, so by-passing the valve cured the problem, not quiet sure if i will replace the valve as there are manual shut off taps inside within easy reach plus at night in my book its always good practice to close the reg-valve at the bottle....................Hope this helps others

Glad you are sorted, but your theory re bottle pressures is flawed.

The pressure of the gas in the bottle is bar, the regulator steps it all down to 28 mbar on butane.
Roughly speaking pressure after the regulator is 100th of that in the bottle.

I suspect that upon inspection of the shut off valve, you will find a yellow deposit which is oil content from the gas, caused by a dirty bottle ....in effect this obstruction reduces the pipe size at this point and the appliances aren't getting gas at the correct pressure when working.

Whilst isolation valves are useful, the valve on the bottle itself is classed as an emergency control valve ..in terms of regulations

I have a Pilote 1999 when i got the same problem with mine a friend changed the shut of tap under the sink and it,s been fine ever since might be worth looking at that.

As per my suggestion, oil residue deposits in the pipework...valves being prone.

I think the problem is sorted if I read correctly, I am offering the probable cause.

Many many thanks for your line of thought, will keep a check for deposits although was not the problem this time but next time it might be, again thanks for the info, have a nice year.............
