can someone please clarify is a carbon monoxide alarm & a gas alarm one & the same.
i am thinking of getting a gas alarm for the camper.

If by gas you mean lpg/propane/butane the no, they are different. Usually American RV’s I have heard of with gas alarms. I think all vans I know about will have smoke alarm and carbon monoxide.

edit: check if is a combined alarm though, some check for more than one thing
 
yes i mean butane/propane. an alarm in case of a gas leak.

Not wishing to 'teach your granny to sick eggs', but additional protection against a gas leak is no bad thing, but primary protection should be gas drop outs.
Dear Grandmother,
Primary protection to prevent the problem by correct installation including checking with leak detector;
Secondary protection is to reduce the impact of failure by drop outs and ventilation;
Tertiary protection is to warn of danger by alarms to warn.

P.S. I think you mean "suck" not "sick".
