Hi, I was on the Garmin site yesterday wondering whether to upgrade my Nuvi maps this year prior to setting out for foreign climes in April.

I came across an item called Garmin Basecamp, new one on me. Having downloaded it I found that it can be used for transferring maps & routes into your unit, providing your unit accepts routes.

I also found that it updated my French speed cameras database & updated my Nuvi software. This after the Garmin site had already told me that no upgrades were available.

I have only just started playing with it so if anybody can add to this thread please do. [ Type "Garmin basecamp" into google to find dowload link]

Nothing to do with the above, but Lidl are selling reflective coats [essential on the Continent] for £1.99 from 9.Feb.

Thought for today -:
Map upgrade £59 = 5 litres of merlot £10 x 5 = £50. A large glass of something red & French if you can guess my choice !

You need to be careful when using your Sat nav for detecting French speed cameras, as they have 'outlawed' their use, and could cost you many euros...:scared:

Hi, I have read about this previously, but I have been using a sat nav in France for many years with no problems.

I also have owned a property in France since 1990 & talking to the locals about this alleged law draws a blank stare. [ Possibly its my accent]

The French embassy states the following -:

Sat navs are perfectly legal in France including one that have a speed radar database.

Locations of speed cameras have to be public knowledge.

Radar detectors are a separate issue These are devices that also allow you to find mobile speed cameras. These are illegal.

Why do you need to know where the speed cameras are, no speedometer? Also Lidl have 1kg ABC fire extinguishers from 9 Feb, cheaper than servicing your old one!

Hi I also had been considering updating mine a nuvi 350 when I bought this several years ago It was with free life time update which I received until April last year then I could no longer receive them. So now being a little anti Garmin I have purchased Auto Route with Dongle for only a little more than map updates and find this a lot better than the Garmin as now I can easily set my preferred route and be directed a long it

Hi, While in Poole yesterday I saw a notice in the widow of Halfords "£30 allowance on satnavs when purchasing a new model".

Hello, thinks I, check this out Dezi. New map download for old satnav £59, but New satnav £109 - £30 £79.

So for an extra £20 I get a new satnav & I can wait up to 30 days before registering product & downloading the latest maps for free.

The lady in the shop said it applied to all satnavs in the the shop. Still thinking about it, anybody else seen this offer ?

I got a garmin satnav last year with free lifetime map updates which I will attempt later today. I had a look at the garmin base camp but it looks a bit fiddly if its a long route to play about with. I would like an easier way of programming them to hop on and off toll roads rather than all tolls or non tolls but can't have everything and in June we have decided time is more important so saving the toll money now.

I am impressed though with being able to add so many custom points of interest in and planning routes. I have already preprogrammed our route in france and just added a supermarket stop in to collect Alcohol! I must get out more!!

There's a programme called TYRE tyre.tk which integrates Google maps with TomTom. You choose your route on Google maps and it downloads it to TomTom, don't know if it works with Garmin though?

The France ban on speed camera warnings of any sort is indeed true and came into force on 3rd January..

Garmin | United Kingdom | In-car Extras - Speed & Safety Cameras

garmin and Tom Tom seem to have it in hand though as its not illegal ( and in fact encouraged by French authorities) to have Danger Zone information in your sat nav, and guess what? ALL french speed cameras are situated in danger Zones, so TT and Garmin are simply replacing one with the other, although they mustn't specifically activate at the camera...

No doubt the French police will consider this a cheap form of revenue when the Brits come rolling in...probably worth the free upgrade before going..:)
