Oh the joys of owning a motorhome from the last century. Just arrived at Flamborough Head east of Bridlington and the exhaust fell off on the way here. Well it was hanging on by one strap and banging about all over the place. Last time it did this was in the Auvergne in France and I strapped it back on with an old hoover cable. Don't let anyone tell you to throw out that bit of 13amp hoover cable you have in your garage! I kept mine and 11 years later it's saved the day once again.

We are here for three weeks so I think I shouldn't push my luck and get it fixed while I'm here. Any recommendations of where to take it? Anyone local?

I’ll phone my friend that lives in Brid and report back

Thanks.

Apparently there is a good mechanic in Flamborough village. Rob Harper. I'll have a whiz down on the scooter and talk to him in the morning. The Farmer who's cl we are on recommended him. I bet the issue will be if he has space and if you can still get an exhaust for a 1996 Peugeot Boxer.

Had an exhaust blow in the middle of France.

Went to loads of garages with no luck.

Then a guy gave me a scrap of paper with three magic word written on it......

I got it sorted in France ok but I do remember it cost a shed load of money. Right hand drive exhaust was hard to get hold of or so they said. Looking at it I think it's knackered. Not long since it had an MOT and a service. You would think it would have been picked up.

Barry, depending on the break, maybe it can be welded? Has to be oxy-acetylene, this gives the welder better control while welding thin rusty material, also no issues with an earth return lead.

I kept my old Dethleffs exhaust alive, also our previous MB SLK exhaust going strong up to us selling vehicles.

Thanks. I've not inspected it closely but it looks like the mounts are rotten and one has disintegrated which probably caused it to drop onto the road. The exhaust has then parted from the first box. Looked a bit knackered to me. There is also a hole in the last section of pipe. I'm not fussed either way if it's mended of replaced as long as I can get someone to do it. Got a couple of options so far. I googled the exhaust and a few options came up so it looks like they are still available. 1996 Boxer. 2.5td

My Fiat Panda failed the MOT in 2012 with a blowing exhaust, I welded it up and it is still on there and passes the MOT every year, Maggy's Fiat 500 failed in 2014 with the same problem, it still has the original exhaust on it, I have always welded my exhausts to repair them, a new exhaust will blow in the same place within a few years so if it is possible to weld it I would give it a try

From experience, most fail where the exhaust tube is welded to a box, or boxes.

What process did you use Terry?

Local guy cant do it so he's recommended this place. Taking it in Friday but I suspect it will need two visits. They sound pretty competent.

I used my old Mig welder but I have a lot of experience welding thin rusty metal (tight Yorkshireman :ROFLMAO:) oxy-acetylene would be better and easier but unfortunately, I don't have access to that any more, I replaced both ends even though it was only the front, then I wrapped it, it was certainly heavier by the time that I finished:D

Yeah, mags with a .6 wire. At least you got the job done.

I like O&A, has many uses and an experienced hand can work the magic with the torch and wire.

Thanks. Rob Harper didn't have the capacity for this van so he recommended John E Marsh in Brid so it's booked into there for a look tomorrow. If they can fix it they will do it tomorrow afternoon if not they will order whats needed and do it later next week. As it's an Alko chassis they are a bit more complicated apparently. I've told him the French replaced it in less than two hours ten years ago so he has to beat that. 😁

Thanks for your help and your friends info. Much appreciated

I ended up biting the bullet on my Talbot express petrol exhaust and had a stainless one fitted after having 2 mild steel ones fitted in 5 year
