Full timing

In the near future I plan buying a used Laika Kreos with a view to living in it full time. Its based on the Mercedes Sprinter. It seems like the ideal van in terms of storage and comfort. However I'm not that familiar with the make and wondered if anyone knows of any problems associated with Laika motorhomes. I also wondered whether there are any problems with full timing and insurance. I've read through the documents from my current insurer and other than the length of overseas cover can't find any caveats regarding the amount of time spent in the van.

Hi, i have never heard of this make of van Laika, but i would think if you pay for your insurance, that should entitled you to stay in it for a year after all thats what its for mate. good luck regards Trev.

full timing

Cheers Trev, yeah I thought it would probably be ok with the insurance but you know what insurance companies can be like sometimes. I'm a bit wary of querying my insurance company because it always seems as if they just look for an excuse to add extra charges eery time I contact them!

Hi George ,

The Laika range of vans are built in Italy near Florence and are owned by the Hymer group.

Laika are a good quality van and are usually trouble free, I had one for three years and we went as far as the Syrian border in Turkey in it.

Insurance for full timing is a grey area have a look at this site for details http://tinyurl.com/yhbqfa you should find answers to most of your questions there.

That's true, but it works the other way as well - if you don't tell them, they have a reason to refuse to pay out. I would ask them, and if they say it's OK, get it in writing. If they want to charge more, it's proof that they see it as a change in risk - and therefore something they regard as a material element of the contract. If they want to charge huge amounts, than it's time to look for another company - but keeping insurers in the dark is never a good idea.

I have got a Laika Ecovip, which was chosen after looking at many vehicles - it has fantastic build quality and drives like a dream. Hope you have fun - keep us posted.

fulltiming

Cheers everyone for the useful information so far. I have contacted one or two insurance companies so far (ta for the url Don) and while some wont cover fulltimers at all, others (particularly Comfort) were very helpful. It seems that fulltiming will more or less double my motorhome insurance, but given the change in lifestyle and the lack of bills for household services I think that the insurance cost will only be a small cross to bear. I just have to hope that my house sale completes quickly now before the motorhome I have my eye on is sold!!
