Fuel tank overwintering

Can someone give me a bit of advise as to which is best whilst the van is hibernating for winter, to leave the fuel tank (diesel in this case) full or empty?? Cheers. Russ.

So doesn't that mean that it will absorb more water because there is more diesel to attract it?

Full, If left empty the air will condense any water vapour. As the temperature changes, the air in the the tank will expand and contract introducing fresh air into the tank through the breather, this fresh air contains water vapour and so the cycle continues.

As the sides of the fuel tank become exposed over time, the water droplets can cause rust ie specs of muck that can clog a filter

It is for this reason that before flight in a light aircraft, a sample of fuel is taken from the lowest point in the fuel tank, it's surprising how much water can collect even in summer!

Diesel fuel will stay in good condition for up to a year, as long as it's kept reasonably cool. The general consensus as far as I'm aware is that, as others have said, it's better to keep your tank full, as this will minimise condensation, which is probably the biggest enemy.

Edited to say: 'Crossed in the post' with the one above, which more or less says the same thing, but more comprehensively!

Thanks guys, full it is then! Could also be an investment because I can't see the price of fuel going down by next spring.

OH YEE Of little faith cant you see a return to the good times coming, the pound will strengthen and the economy will soar. diesel will be 7/6d a gallon and pensions will pay bonusses again
righte ime off to take my MEDICATION now
HAPPY DAYS MOS:(

Mos, What drugs you been taking, and where can I get some.

Of course the best thing is to fill it and then empty it again and then fill..................................... or camping as it is often called:lol-053:
Do love a bright morning in the frost and bed early cos it's dark:heart::dnd:

Dry Fuel

Has anyone used Wynns DRY FUEL. It claims to absorb water in diesel and petrol, one container to a full tank.

Can be difficult to fill a diesel fuel tank at the forecourt pump because of foaming, unless you take the time to dribble away as it were, or top up when you get home. So the top of the tank may be exposed to air/condensation= rust. Rocking the van once in a while sufficient enough to swill the fuel around will give the surface a recoat.

Yes Hygroscopic means exactly that ! Check out your science as you will find I am right . Why do boat owners have their tanks tested for water in the diesel and if found it can be cleaned . As in centrifuged to remove water also Diesel can be infected with the dreaded diesel bug !!!!!!!

Which is the reason why you should change brake(mineral and glyco/ethanol based) fluid regularly, being hygroscopic means steel pipes rust and the boiling point of the fluid drops.
