I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of fitting a LPG conversion to their campers .

I would class myself as a fairly competent mechanic and I cannot see any problems fitting the kit myself . Other than the insurance required certificate

It would be good to hear of any tips you guys have .

I have found a supplier who can supply a kit for a reasonable £457 if anyone else fancies a go here is the site address

Hi Steve.

If your reasonably competent with the spanners fitting LPG should not be a problem, finding somewhere to locate the components and routing the pipes are probably the most difficult bits.

I did convert mine and ran LPG untill I converted to diesel. See here.

I would do some checking around to see if you have a local LPG conversion fitters locally, as many of these will check your instalation and issue with a certificate, I would do this before you buy as you may find that there supply only prices for the parts are not that much different and they would be much more willing to offer help if they have sold you the kit.

Here is another link to a firm I have not had personel dealings with, but have heard good reports about and I believe the will do the inspection on thier kits once installed if you take it to them.

I do apoligise to Admin if this link is out of order but I an only trying to help.

Another area to get right if fitting LPG is the H.T. electrics. Cap and Rotor arm A1 condition, very, very good/uprated Plug leads, good quality Sparkplugs, with reduced gap and possibly 1 heat range harder. Altering the ignition timing may also be benificial but may require some trial and error for best results.

Hope this helps a little, but my prime advice would be to find someone local if possible (first comment above).

We had a rangerover a few years ago and i fitted the system myself,as others have said its quite easy although the pressure from the tanks to the regulator is at 7bar(bottle pressure) so make sure you use plenty leak detection fluid-soapy up liquid will do but you are not supposed as its corrosive.when we did the rangey the kit came from tinley tech and the backup was good but he supplys alot to the 4x4market

As the goverment has said it will double the duty on LPG over the next two years it will soon be as expensive as petrol, unless you can tap it off a domestic tank at home.

If you fit a system yourself you insurance company may require an inspection certificate, so may work out nearly as cheap to get a local company to fit & certify it.

Nosha,

You're frightening me. Can you tell me where you saw this please? I've been googling like mad trying to find a reference to this and the nearest I can find is a news item from last November saying that the Government had renewed a three year rolling commitment to maintaining the difference on duty between LPG and petrol thus keeping LPG at half the price of petrol for at least three years. This isn't the same as doubling the duty in three (or two) years time. It's just saying that the difference will be maintained for at least three years. It doesn't mean that it will double in price at that time. It doesn't even mean that there will be any change then - just that there won't be any change until then. If you're interpreting this or a similar news item as a commitment to abolishing the difference between LPG duty and petrol duty in a couple of years then I hope you're wrong.

But if you can point me to an authoritative news source then I will be grateful to you. But I really, really hope you're wrong.

Sorry for slight hijack.

I can't add to any help for the original poster except that my first conversion was done in Portugal without a certificate and my insurers accepted the conversion without quibble. Didn't even want to know who did it. My second conversion was done in England and my insurers, nine years on, did want a copy of the certificate. I don't know what they would have wanted if I hadn't had one.

I don't know if I would want to be bothered to convert, I run my Diesel on Veg Oil and look how much that has shot up, from 45p a litre to 85p a litre. Government have said I can use 2500 litres before i pay tax. Manufacturers obviously see profit and hiked up the proffit margin. You pay the price when it becomes the popular product.
