Just driven to West Cornwall and back. Love the place but weather rubbish. Have done the estimate and it seems my Hymer S660 (3 litre diesel engine) did about 19 miles to the gallon. Seems like a very expensive trip! Went up to Scotland in August and it seemed a lot less. The engine has only done 60k. Does this level of consumption seem about right? How would I know if for example the mixture was rich? It was a windy drive, this could make a difference? All insight or suggestions very much appreciated. Chris
 
wind makes a big diffrence chris in my opion i relate it to when i cycle i prob use at least 20 percent more workload. other factors like long hills etc
 
yip got to be the wind, also don't do more than 57 mph after this your consumption spikes upward. I've studied this for many a year @ 57mph my van gives 35 to the gallon, above 60mph this drops to 21 - 24mph.
 
I drive mine by the revs and try not to go over 2000
2k in 6th gear gives 62/mph on the clock.
I drive in auto all the time.
Scotland and back over New Year got 24 average, I expect to get better in warmer weather.
mine is 4250kg but under 4 most of the time

There sure don't.... Talking to a Canadian i know and he could not believe what we pay over here!
 
I know air pressure and temperature does make a difference to non turbo engines.

High air pressure and cold air are best.

Don't know the effect on turbo motors
 
I'm managing to get just about 25mpg with my 3 litre Rapido A class, about 26k miles on the clock. This is driving it as carefully as I can, also tend to drive it around 2000 rpm in 6th which gives me about 55 mph (sat nav speed). Still trying to get used to the best way to drive it for economy. Interested in peoples opinions on best economical way to drive, is it to accelerate rapidly through the gears & get into top as soon as possible, accelerate slowly keeping the revs low or is it somewhere in between? Wind resistance & drag are probably the biggest influences, also finding what is the most economic speed.

humm..

Funny but i seem to be doing better with my latest 2.8l turbo diesel fiat than i was with a non turbo 2.4 vw... maybe i'm giving less beans as it's a faster van?

(of course thats before i lost 5th gear - not doing so well on fuel at the moment! )

we just travel...... never worry about the fuel consumption.......but if the winds in your face, will make a difference......

I run a 5t a class 3 litre fiat and get 20mpg when pushing on at about 70, or nearer 25mpg when running at 58, these are calculated figures not relying on the fuel computer which can be seriously inaccurate. I feel thats pretty good overall given say an older Fiesta petrol will only do 32ish.
 
Fuel consumption in my van is fantastic. When the little light comes on, fill it up and drive till the little light comes on again!

Had the van 10 years and haven't got a clue what the MPG is but always enjoy the journey and the places I stop in.....

I am quite keen to know mpg, really to assist with planning holidays, and how much money to allow for fuel.
My last vehicle was a coachbuilt 6 berth, 7.5m, 4 Tonne (max), hightop with a 2.8JTD engine, and I was running about 25mpg on long continental trips.
My current vehicle is an A class, 4 berth, 6.9m, 4.5 Tonne (max), also with a 2.8 JTD engine, and it gives about 22mpg on long continental trips.

I was led to believe that an A class should give better mpg than a coach built due to the awkward shapes of the coachbuilt vehicles. Is this true?
 
forgot to mention that correct tyre pressures are important and use "cruise control" if fitted whenever you can.

Your consumption figure is about right.

I have the S700 with the same 410D 5 speed box. Over the last six years I have averaged 20mpg. My worst was 15.5mpg towing the Smart on the trailer. On the same run through France I got 25mpg on one occasion.


Hymer's figures from the manual are Fuel Consumption: 12–14 litres/100km (17 to 20MPG).

I didn't realise you only had 5 gears, having 6 makes a big difference
 
i find my truck on average while touring with the trailer does 16mpg . at home no trailer about 18-19mpg .
on a winter trip just keep putting it in make a note of date how much etc but really it doesnt matter .you have to put it in .
 
My Ford auto roller low profile 2.2, 6 speed with 10,000 on the clock according to the trip computer is averaging 32mpg.
