Fuel and general budget

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble finding a reliable up to date source for fuel prices in Europe. Also I was wondering what your opinion might be on a weekly budget for travelling around western Europe (attempting to do it as cheaply as possible).

Thank you for all help

Sincerely

Scott

In Germany and France - and maybe other countries as well - NEVER buy fuel on the freeways (why travel on them either if you aren't in a hurry) but instead use the fuel outlets at the big supermarkets. Some are 24/7 but unmanned and need a chipped credit card, but most are manned during normal business hours (which means NOT during the standard 2 1/2 hour lunch breaks)

Price there is normally 10 cents per litre cheaper than non-supermarket outlets. 1.30 to 1.40 Euros for diesel would cover a fair bit of the southern half of France at the moment. 0.15 dearer for standard petrol.

Thank you for all your help, i really appreciate it.

Safe travels

As a general rule, the UK has the highest prices in Europe.
So when heading over there I base my budget on UK, so I've usually got a bit of cash spare just in case.

Don't want to speak to soon but the price of diesel has fallen here by 6 cents a litre over the past week at our local Leclerc (which is not the cheapest in the region) to 1.30 a litre.
Lets hope the trend continues.
Regards Nolly.

As for general budget, one of the main items might be camping fees and if you are set up for free camping, the fees can be as close to zero as you want. Most countries - but especially France and Scandinavia and Portugal - either encourage or at least with a bit of common sense on your part, tolerate free or low cost camping.

Too many personal lifestyle factors for anything we tell you to be much use in your situation.

winter before last we travelled around the coast of spain and portugal.5months. ferry to santander, across to barcelona then turned right hugged the coast back to the port. yes we do take a bit of tinned food etc from here .we thats twoof us spent about 2,500pounds all in .my mate travelling alone reckons he spent2,300pounds . we dont eat out or go to bars etc (rarely)we try our best to free camp ,avoid tollroads etc. never buy water we play it like a game.this winter the same vehicles but me travelling alone for 6 months and visiting maroc (extra ferry and fuel)but not going to portugal spent about 3,500 pounds. prices have gone up quite abit in europe .i reckon uk is about the cheapest for living costs (not beer ,fuel, fags)but its possible to find a few things worth bringing back to live on when home. the longer you go for and the slower you move the cheaper it seems . 2-3 weeks would cost as much as 6 months almost. have fun we do.

Thanks guys, off to Biarritz at the end of the month, £1.39 - £1.43 around here at the moment so will fill up when we get off the ferry!!!

There used to be a page on Teletext listing EU fuel prices - last used last year.

Some general fuel price tips for France:

In general the 24 hour automatic places at the big supermarkets, Intermarche, Casino, Leclerc, etc are significantly lower than the chain and independent petrol stations. The most expensive are those in small villages with a captive market, (Today in St-Andre is 1.49 for diesel vs 1.32 20 km away in Castellane).

Saturdays and local market days are usually the lowest price days, sometimes significantly.

Watch for special offers. Intermarche offers a 5 euro credit in the supermarket if you put 30 litres in your tank on Saturday morning. And that was with a price already 10 centimes below the price down the street ( 1.32 for diesel), making an effective price of €1.15.

BTW, camping gas here is €15.10 vs the £22.50 I paid in Cornwall. That is 40% less!

At 1.1473 I made it more like 23% but I am no mathematician, its still a good bargain.

Thanks for the tips Peter.

best get a truckand trailer . as we came past san vincente de barquetta near santander we found a garage at 126 euro for diesel. 300 litres please.you can bring up to about12-1500ltr in working tanks hung at the sides no tanks across the chassis. always come home with full tanks .my vw,lt could bring 450ltr .this one is only400ltr. but worth it. add on the wine beer and soon i need more carrying capacity than most campers have when they are empty.i can get from morocco up to northern spain on cheap maroc fuel. only 60p a litre there. never buy fuel in portugal too expensive there.keep looking for bigger tanks but most i see are abit too wide for my chassis. shame.

no longer any need to pay pump prices in portugal

supermarkets like LIDL / Modelo are giving out discount tickets for 7/10c litre when you buy your groceries

brings prices down to spanish prices

in fact the pump price at intermarche at elvas in portugal [ last month ]was cheaper than anything I saw crossing spain
