From Cadiz - to go east or west?

We have now been in the Cadiz area for almost 4 weeks and are thinking about our next move.

It will either be west towards and into Portugal or east and the Mediterranean coastline between Almeria and Benidorm.

We had originally planned to go west however the weather around Cadiz for the last 3 weeks has given us second thoughts. There have been continuous high and gusty winds which has made getting out and about on 2 wheels difficult and tempered what we had planned to do in the area. This has been combined with lots of cloud and limited sun. Chatting to neighbours these continuous high winds for an extended period is unusual for the area.

Checking the weather the conditions along the Spanish Costa de Luz match those along the Portuguese Algarve. Whereas the weather along the south eastern Spanish coastline is, and always has been, more settled.

And entering Portugal the nights are longer as the sun sets earlier (clocks move to GMT) even when compared to eastern Spain. A minor point but a consideration.

So do we go to the Atlantic coastline Algarve and then work our way up the western coast to Lisbon, with what could be unsettled windy conditions?

Or do we head towards the south east corner of Spain where there could be more settled conditions and less wind?

The issue is of course nobody can predict future weather accurately and the wind may have blown itself out.

We have plenty of experience of weather in south east Spain but limited experience of weather along the Portuguese coastline in late February and March.

So the real question is, for those who have plenty of experience of weather in Portugal for the period described above, what would we typically expect?

Are there likely to be longish spells of high gusty winds and cloud, or does it tend to settle down with lighter winds and decent spells of sunshine?

Viewing the ventusky weather forecast, which actually seems like a decent app so thank you for pointing us to it, decision made.

We were last in Portugal in 2019. We had decent dry weather and lightish winds that trip. Speaking with regulars at the time they did suggest this was freak weather and not normal and we had benefited from a long calm spell of settled weather for 4 weeks.

Looking at the forecast for Portugal entering the early part of March it is looking what may be considered more normal with gusty spells of highish winds and some cloudy days with spells of rain.

It all looks more settled and drier in south east Spain so that is where we are heading via Ronda and Granada and onwards east. We did the coastal route via Gibraltar and Malaga last year so the inland route will make a change.

We have been in Spain for over a month now and out of all our winter trips down here, this has been the worst one for the weather. It's picked up for the last week or so but temps no higher than 16/17 degrees and I'd say 50/50 regarding sunny days or cloudy ones. The wind has been noticeably cooler this year as well.

That is true but at least it has been mostly dry , at least compared to our daughter in Newcastle!

Agree with this assessment but it has been dry.

Unlike the U.K. no shortage of fruit, veg, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers so it would appear the Spanish are keeping it all for themselves this year.

Here is hoping March in Spain (and Portugal) is drier than last year.

It could not get any wetter!

I'd say we have had more rain on this trip than previous ones tbh but still no where near the same as back home in Wales!
