fridge not charging

Hi all, I realised that my fridge/freezer was not charging while driving on 12 volt. I have tracked it down to the relay next to the main battery. Once I opened it up and held the contacys together the fridge worked again.

Can anyone please tell me where I can get hold of these relays?

Thanks

Hi Marty, Halfords do a relay, item number 473553-0 at £16.99.

or www.justkampers.com do a split charge relay kit at £20.
item number J10520.

Hope this helps, Mark.

May not be a problem with the relay. Could be in whatever is operating the relay - ie a feed from the ignition circuit (sometimes picked up from the brake circuit)

If you can unplug the relay, apply 12V to the coil terminals and see if the relay closes.

Thanks for all your replies,I will try the testing of the relay itself. Also not sure what is meant getting the power from the brakes? please could you explain some please?

Thanks again for all your help

There is a power circuit that becomes energised when the ignition is turned on, some makers use the power circuit that lights up the brake circuit test/fail lamps. You can use any circuit you like as long as it turns off when you stop the engine - lights dont, they stay powered up all the time. The advantage of using the brake circuit is that its often an unused circuit except at startup or if the brake fluid is low so has plenty of power available to power a solenoid.

Personally I prefer to use the signal wire (the one lights up your alternator lamp on the dash) from the alternator to ensure that there is power being generated before the split charge system swaps over.

Thanks Roger. Yes, some installers take the easy way out and pick up the control signal off the brake switch (assuming it is switched by the ignition) to retract the step and satellite dish and enable the starting battery to leisure battery interconnect circuit.

I know this because on my installation, that wire rubbed through under the vehicle and blew the brake light fuse and stopped the retraction and charging system from working.

Suggested it because there are several reasons why the OP's relay might not be working and a open circuit coil is the least likely reason so best to check the more obvious reasons before going to the trouble and expense of buying a new relay.

Thanks again to you all, will keep you informed, will try and test the relay first.

Thanks again

Hi, I tried this and the relay did not close. So I will order a new relay..where is the best place to get one..and what is it actually called?

thanks again

Martyb take the relay to any motorist discount store and they will be able to help you.

Well, I have solved the problem..I hope? I refiited the relay...checked the wires coming off it. All seemed ok,I the tracked the wires back, one of which was not connected to anything????? Althought it had a spade connector on the end and was near the rear of the fuse box. I tried all the connections one by one..no joy. Obviously I want the fridge to go off with the ignition to prevent draining my main battery. So ....long story short I wired it the the power of the stereo...which goes off with the ignition!!! Hurraahhhhh

Thanks to everyone who hs helped in one way or another

Hi all, the problem was that the relay was not get the "power" I see what was being said about the brakes now. Long story short I rigged it to the power of the stereo...works fine now. Thanks again all.. Marty
