French Coast and Beach Stops

Hi Everyone

We're leaving the UK in four weeks time on our first long trip in our Mercedes Vario. We will be heading in the direction of Brittany and then the whole coast of France into Spain. I know there are posts I can find via the search facility but thought I'd ask if any of you have any first-hand experience of some nice wild stopover locations, on or near beaches along the french coast?

We'll be taking our dog Barney and will be looking to surf wherever possible if that helps with feedback?

Cheers for your help.

Claire

P.S. Any Aires recommendations would be much appreciated too :)

Travelling France

Hi Claire

Well Done. Before you start get a copy of All The Aires - it's invaluable (see vicarious books)
My wife and I went to work with Eurocamp in France last year and spent a week travelling to our site in the Aveyron region hugging the coast roads as much as possible.
First stop in your direction should be Wissant, 20Km from Calais. New clean site but no water/bins.
Continue along the coast toward Caen and on into Britanny, plenty to see and do and loads of aires - stay to the smaller villages and you will find the majority are free and offer water and hook up.
On our way down but for the fact we chose to stay at Futuroscope at Poitiers (36 hours for 8 euro) we stayed for free travelling nearly 600 miles.
On the return journey we found the nearer you are to the touristy Atlantic coast the higher the prices and the lower the chances of finding free aires. We did find a few - but so did everyone else!
The best was the car park near the Courvoisier distillery - water, elcetric and waste. Having the table out enjoying a beer and the local Gendarme passed to ensure all was ok.

There are plenty of places to stay - and for free. The difference between France and this anti motorhoming country is that places to stay are easier to find and more tolerated.

We are off again next Sunday and will be taking in the north and east to this years site in the Jura region and looking forward to it.

Have a good time and keep a diary - it will give you a good laugh when you are sat in the dark next Christmas.

Thanks very much Bill & Judy and Ian. There's loads of helpful info there - I'll be sure to take note of them all!

Thanks again,

Claire
