France / Breathalyser

Hello.

As it is now a legal requirement to carry a breathalyser kit whilst driving in France do you intend to buy one (assuming you are going to drive in France) ?
If so which one. They can be bought on Ebay for under £10 or up to £500 for the one the police use.
How can you be sure of there accuracy ?

this one is eazy !! buy the cheapest here and don't drive if you have the least doubt you could fail:scared: year's ago the scot's police where bagging us at 6am going to work when i contracted up there, biker's are regularly bagged on their sunday morning blast's to the coast !! it's more about revenue than safety!! the french will make more out of those not having them than they will the drunk's

Hello
Must have misunderstood. I got the impression from an article on this mornings BBC breakfast show that the new law came into effect 1st January.
Still spring is not far away.

That's how I understood it from this mornings news plus a ban on the use of sat-nav in France.

Sometimes these stories take on a life of their own and even the BBC can get carried away and repeat some bit of nonsense that started out in some tiny expatriates' newsletter. One of the big clubs has written to the French authorities, who are not able to confirm any starting date for the compulsory carrying of breathalysers.

As for the French banning sat-navs, never! They already ban speed camera detectors that read the radar emissions from certain kinds of cameras but, as far as I can remember, they do not yet ban speed camera locators, which many of us have in our sat-navs. The location of speed cameras is in the public domain and they are already shown on many maps.

Can you imagine the public outcry if satellite navigation were to be banned? Apart from which, it's built in to most cars these days. It could well be that the French government is considering banning even speed camera locators, which means that we'd have to remove the POI from our devices or simply not activate the speed camera POI, but banning sat-navs will never happen.

Just done a bit of goggling and apparently the new law is not effective yet, but is due to become law sometime in the spring.
Sarkozy is on a crusade!

French limit is 50mg in 100ml
UK is 80mg in 100ml

Hi. I contactacted my French daughter-in-law on the subject as we are returning to France next week. She confirmed what you have already said that it is due to come into effect spring 2012.

Regards Nolly.

Hi All

I read on another sight that some of the members of this site belong to and it stated in on of the replies that it only apply's to French Registered cars/lorry's/campers. However I don't know if this is true!!:(
Bye for now
Freddie:)

That's interesting Freddie. As a visitor I thought it was obligatory to comply with that countries driving regulations, Such as carrying triangles & reflective vests ect. Looking at the cost involved it may be safer to carry one, it's difficult to argue when faced with an on the spot fine especialy in a foreign country.

It doesn't apply to anyone !!!! no law has been passed, everyone is being a little forward, wait and see if they produce a law first then we will see if we need to comply or not

Edited due to spelling

Hi Nolly
Yes I agree with you. However I only stated what was on the other site. I think we will have to wait to see when it becomes law in France. On the other site there is even some confusion as to when this will come in force. Some have said 1st Jan. Others have said March/April.
Bye for Now

Nice one BigG thanks for the info I'll probably do the same.

Regards Gray.

As a Boring Old F*** who can't be bothered to track the events of the French Government or it's stupid ideas I have purchased three breathalysers which are EU rated from Latest Model Breathalysers from value-breathalysers.co.uk the UK's leading breathalyzer supplier. The UK's largest supplier of commercial & Health Care Breathalyser Equipment cost £8.33 inc vat and delivery.

Seems a small price to pay to wave in the face of an expectant Gendarme hoping for a collar!

pop over to france and get the prize as the only person in the country to have one!!!

Good call bigG, although I'll probably leave it a while until they have gone up in price or they are in short supply. That's how it normally happens with me.

I have two points to make
1/ The breathaliser is not in force yet, talking about sometime in the spring.
There is going to be two types on sale A multi use model at around 100 euros and a single use model at a couple of euros (paper talk re price) Note if you have the cheaper model you will need to carry two as if you use one you will need spare so as not to break the law.
Nothing has been said about Gendarmerie using your device they have their own.

2/ They have not banned the use of Sat/Nav It is any type of Radar Detecting device. What has been stated is. If you have a radar detector device fitted to your sat/nav then it must be de-activated. If you have free standing device it must also be inactive (best keep it in a cupboard) as it can be confiscated.
Hope this helps
Eve: :goodluck:

Confiscated! They put my Road Angel under my front wheel & told me to drive over it!!

At the end of the day the French people will have their own way and bring in their own, same old rule as they do with everything; "That is for the English not the French" drivers. :lol-053:

The speed camera thing is great and also pointless. Many of you may already be aware that currently the administration cost for the frenchies to chase up minor speeding violations by us brits outweighs the cost of the fine, so they just don't bother. Yes if you get caught by the fuzz its diferent but fixed speed cameras in question here! Of course i never speed when im in france
