What thickness of foam do you recommend I use for the seating,it will also be used as a mattress,by the way I prefer a firmer mattress.

never mind the thickness.....!

We ordered foam last year, it is the grade that is more important than thickness. We choose a firm at 5" and could have got away with 4" so ask your supplier who will be able to advise. Cheapest we found delivered was a company in Leamington Spa and good advice. There are several in Ebay that supply it covered in cloth for for under two hundred quid but don't know what grade of foam used!

Funny I should read your post regards a foam matress. Our U shaped lounge at the rear is now a permanent large double bed. While I was in Germany visiting, I popped into a foam place I knew of. Bought a 200 x 168 cm foam piece which is 20 cm= 5" thick. Nice and firm yet comfortable to lie on. Wife was real pleased with it as it was especially for her. I paid €140. The guy even cut it to the shape I needed for nothing. It sounds expensive but well worth the price. He sells them even with 3 and 4" thick.

I used a company in Leeds called Foam For Comfort who I found very helpful
as I also like a firm mattress due to having a lower back problem. they could be worth a call as they are in your area.

When I've pulled the covers off our foam bed/seat cushions they have at least three types of foam that I can see, maybe more. The seat edges where legs would go are made of sifter foam about 2" thick. The seat backs are similar with the top of the seat back being softer and contoured over the top edge of the seat backs. The other edges seem to made of firm stuff. The central part of the seat/bed is very firm and has a thin padded cloth glued (maybe) around the edges. The covers are held taut by upholstery buttons through the foam.

Interstingly the overhead bed only uses a single foam - so I assume all the extra work is about making the folding bed/seat comfortable as a seat.

Bum padding....

depends on how much padding your bum has got....;) ha ha ha...
seriously, the thicker the better....:)
