Fixed LPG and refilables to be banned on Tunnel (And possibily FERRIES!)

This is alarming to say the least. I found this article in my local rag from Saturday in the travel section.

I have not found anything online to back it up but if its true it could cause a lot of problems for many of us travelling abroad!

I cant find it online so have scanned it in.

Noooooooo, It's only 2hrs since my underslung LPG tank was fitted :(

Since when are the boats banning LPG POWERED vehicles? So why should they suddenly do so?
 
I would like some clarification as it talks about 'All that will be allowed are clearly marked Calor cylinders...' but when I'm going to France for lengthy periods (or in winter) I remove my 2 x 6Kg Calor Propane cylinders and replace them with Intermarche 2 x 10Kg Butane ones. Surely the authorities will allow ANY removable gas cylinder and not insist that they must be branded as 'Calor'.

I can see this causing real problems for lots of people, myself included.

I can see a lot of "Calor conversion kits" popping up on Ebay. A set of stickers and some red rattle cans :lol-049:

Does anyone really expect both Eurotunnel and all ferry companies to adopt such a stance, just think of the monitary impact, as there would be no caravans, or MH's using their services.

Whenever a reporter needs to file copy but has nothing to report there is always a source that says, its probably rubbish.

however an email to the companies may be in order.
 
No idea, but my gut reaction is their source has been on the sauce. :)
 
Hmmmm? Only used the tunnel twice. On the way out was visually checked. On the way back French "inspector" ask if gas was switched off and made no effort to inspect.
Only marked Calor cylinders are to be allowed so any foreigner without will not be allowed to travel with cylinders.

Just a bit early for 1st April. ;)

If it was from the Daily Mail then I would agree with you. As it is not a national daily, the story must be out there somewhere as it does not originate with the newspaper.

I am not too worried. I have an underslung gas tank and all I will do is put a 'water' sticker next to the filler. Those thick Froggies will not know the difference. :dance:

How do you arrive at that conclusion? When I was a tugger, I used Calor cylinders in my caravan, just like every other caravanner (or Intermarche ones n France) but when I moved over to a motorhome I continued to use replaceable cylinders, again like the majority of motorhomes, so I believe there will still be thousands of us using the ferries or tunnel if (when) this rule is implemented and I don't think it will have any real impact on the companies' profitability.

Good idea - I've already gone into production. Now how do you set up an Ebay shop?

But to be serious for a moment, I can see them banning fixed LPG tanks, but surely they can't insist that replaceable cylinders have to be 'Calor' as that would fall foul of EU Directives on free trade and the movement of goods, or something like that.

Conclusion because THE SOURCE says they will ban all fixed tanks and refillable bottles. all bottles are refillable. and there are too many lpg companies supplying bottles they will not put a label on saying CALOR, this is why I also concluded its probably crap.

email already sent, should have a reply in 48 hrs. I would suggest everyone sending them an email and asking for clarification.

Oh! This is really worrying, we have just ordered a refillable system and plan to travel to France for the first time in a couple of months, we haven't decided whether to use the tunnel or ferries yet so please can you let us know the responses to your email when you get them?

Do you think its worth all of us contacting all the companies with protest emails?

How will they know our bottles are refillable? could we just paint them red?

Sorry if my questions are naive, I'm new to motorhoming

There is nothing to protest at this time !!

T&C's on the tunnel/ferry operators websites have not altered, as long as the LPG is turned off, you can travel.

LPG vehicles are not allowed on Tunnel, never have been
 
It reads like whoever wrote it has no understanding about LPG, as somebody mentioned if only bottles marked Calor are allowed then that means banning most other European motorhomes from using them. I have a re-fillable Alugas bottle & carry a small Calor bottle that I also refill. All that would change would be people would refill their own Calor bottle which carries a higher risk of causing an accident if they don't know what they are doing than filling a proper refillable bottle.

Aren't the Gasit bottles red, just make your own Calor stickers & put them on.

'Our Source' a wide ranging term.


....... a source I heard recently said tyre and wheel companies are working together to develop a square wheel and tyre to help stop vehicles rolling down hills, it has to be called 'black square things' but will be banned in Switzerland because they are going to rely on the very primitive system called brakes, the source also added that they will be fitted with top secret woo woo valves and a pink version will available for ladies only after they have proved they can use said top secret woo woo valves. The source also revealed they will be released on 30 February in the new year. The Source also revealed he was struggling for story and a grain of an idea came to him when playing with his lego he got Christmas.
