Fylde Borough Council • Motorhome parks plan to boost tourism

Five new seafront motorhome parks could soon be driving Fylde’s development as a forward-looking tourist area.

Proposals for new beach huts in St Annes were unveiled last week.

Now, councillors are consulting residents on proposals to introduce new motorhome parks to accommodate the growing numbers of motorhome enthusiasts.

Councillor Albert Pounder, Fylde Council cabinet member for customer and operational services, said: “There has been an explosion in motorhome ownership in the last 10 years – but their owners have few places to stay overnight.

“In resorts all over the country they are parking on residential roads and having to frequently drive around the block to avoid parking tickets.

“Establishing places where they can stay overnight will make Fylde an even more attraction destination for these prosperous visitors.”

The new proposal involves developing existing car parks at:

• North Beach;

• North Promenade;

• St Annes swimming pool;

• Fairhaven Road;

• St Paul’s Avenue;

• Stanner Bank.

Each car park will remain open to motorists.

Tourism authorities, often council-run, in France and Germany already provide popular Aire for Service and Stellplatz sites which feature toilet and wash facilities and electricity hook-ups.

Fylde’s proposed sites will charge £5 per night, allow stays of up to three nights, forbid outdoor cooking and the dumping of waste or rubbish.

Once established, if the parks are a success, a network of car parks could also be established in Blackpool and Wyre – giving coastal Lancashire a nationwide reputation for welcoming motorhomers.

Councillor Pounder added: “Motorhomers can be a nuisance to residents when they park on residential roads. We can relieve that problem and develop tourism further with this plan.

“We already have the car parks, so the cost would be minimal.

“Without a doubt, motorhomers are the sort of prosperous and well-behaved visitors that we want in Fylde. This is a new and growing market in which we can be ahead of our competitor resorts.”

As well as nearby residents, consultees will include neighbouring businesses and hotels.

At long last a council with a realistic view, the problem we as motorhome owners are causing isn't going to go away so it needs a responsible approach. Lets hope it that it isn't abused if it goes ahead.

Some possible problems I see, it says that it will forbid dumping of waste or rubbish :confused: they really need to think about that, one solution would be to have at least one of the sites with facilities to dump the toilet & waste water.

Even so we should show our support & if we visit make it clear when we are buying from local shops who we are so they can see the benefits.

Excellent news , who do we all e-mail to show our support ?

If you follow the link that John put about the article there is an option to add a comment on the website.

Those car parks are usually pretty empty because you have to pay to park in them during the day and there is free on street parking nearby. (daft or what, should be the other way round if they want to encourage people to use the car parks instead of clogging up the streets but I digress)
As regards cost they used to be free to park overnight so I guess its a money making idea by the council as nobody else would pay to park in them.
Frankly I would rather park my stealth camper in a quiet street than some of them because of the boy racers tearing round at night. Throwing litter about that the local hoteliers will probably blame us for.

Without the same facilities as European Aires the Council might as well not bother. Some people will dump their rubbish irrespective of what the signs say. The "doubters" will then be able to say "I told you so"
Good : 10/10 for courage and 1/10 for planning

I'm not sure that there had been any 'planning' yet and anyway it's going to be one step at a time - if the scheme works then facilities may get added later.

At least they are trying, and should be encouraged.
