First wildcamping night on my own, and where am I?

Hi there, done my first wildcamping night last friday. Finished work at 9pm then drove west finally getting to my destination about 12ish.

Pulled up in a carpark on the coast and jumped in the back to get some shuteye, do you think I could sleep? nah, everytime a car went past I was up looking round thinking somebody was coming to clamp me/knock my window and tell me to move on!

Does anybody else have this problem?

Had about 2hrs kip out of 6.

In the morning I drove further up the coastal road and found a small carpark with 3 MHs in it, should have gone up there!

A few piccies and can you tell me where I am?

Well done for your first outing!

No, I don't have the problem with passing cars. Except if I park so close to the road in a lay-by that passing lorries rock the van with air currents. I'd recommend scouting out your locations on Google maps streetview. You can navigate along your road, as though you were driving along, and you will pick up on any set back carparks etc

:yeahthat:
I think if you asked them, most people will say they were a bit paraniod the first time out...Don't worry, it'll pass.
Are you at Newgale sands?

The only times I've really felt paranoid are when I've been on my own (that is, no other vehicle) - unless I know the place, of course. I tend to pick quiet side roads, having scouted them up and down first. Also, I usually try to arrive around dusk, when everyone's watching the telly and (hopefully) no one's taking any notice of what's going on in the street.

I've also, inadvertantly, parked over in 'No Camping' areas, but haven't been bothered. If it doesn't specifically state 'No Motorhomes', then who's to know you're in there anyway after lights out?

Wherever it was you went, I'd like to know. It looks fantastic.

Definitely felt that way on our first time, but slept all the same!! You do get used to it, and we are not bothered if we are the only camper there. The only places we definitely avoid are urban carparks, as I really WOULD be nervous there. I have this probably misplaced belief that trouble making yobbos are less likely to appear in rural places!!

Hi novo,

Using my powers of deduction, I see that you're based in South Wales, you left work at 9pm, drove west and reached your destination 3 hours later........ So I
would guess you're somewhere in the middle of the south Irish Sea??

Seriously though, Well done on getting your first night of wilding!

I think a lot of people find it hard to sleep the first time, with a mixture of adventure/excitement and apprehension, but you should soon get used to it, and begin
to feel at home in your van wherever you park up, especially on multi-night trips.

As kernowprickles says, I feel less settled near bigger urban areas, but I'm completely at ease on my own in the more remote wild areas.

Hope you have many happy years of wildcamping!

Thanks for the replies guys

10 out of 10, Newgale it was. Should have gone further don the coastal road towards Nolten Haven, there was 3 MH parked up.

Nice calculation bud. :cool1:

My wife and I find it useful to have a hearing aid that we can take out before we go to bed! :lol-053:

A necessity in my van, snoring in a big metal box is not good :scared:

Yes-I know what you mean!
I spent 5 months last year-just my dog and I, travelling around Scotland, and, to be honest, was always a little wary, especially in urban areas. I have a Transit with no windows in the back, so when parked up it just looks like a work van, and nobody knows whether its me and my dog there-or a big hulking fella!
Had a few weird moments-but on the whole-it was great! I love it!
The freedom to come and go, the magic of it all, is incomparable!
Now saving up for a trip to Wales!
