gas

hi campers
best to get a second bottle, don't get a new one try local papers or your local dump lots about,If you go to calour lite it has a dial but can cost a bit more
just weigh it, I find a 6kg bottle lasts about two weeks off hook up put depends on heater use for shower etc. just returned from two month's in europe
and It was not to bad, We had a honda geni but did not use it as we stayed on sites with hook up and used it for every thing were possible, we also took took a small electric hob to save the gas. Still learning, we had a great time and many other campers gave us ideas for the future. Some of the people
we spoke to used a french/Austrian bottle that you refill in hardware stores. I think we pay through the nose for our bottles and refills I did not hear of
any blow ups while out there, But I am still looking in to the bottle gas problem for next year as it is the main problem traveling

When I was getting mine built I asked the same question - I wanted a gauge fitted....I was told not to bother
as it would read full until the last minute and then drop away suddenly....others on the forum have said the same..
best advice appears to be the cheap magnetic temperature sensors that show you the gas level in the bottle which
are about a £5.

Gauges work on pressure in the bottle so a gauge will read OK when in fact there is very little gas left in the bottle. [The gas in a bottle is in liquid form hence L liquid P petroleum G gas ] it turns to gas as it escapes the regulator so is safe to burn. You can weigh bottles to find out how much is left in the bottle but this is a bit hit and miss, what modt of us do is have a spare bottle connected and the valve closed , when the bottle in use runs out just open the valve on the full one and off you go, you then know that you need to get a replacement for the empty one, there are all sorts of automatic change over valves you can fit to save you turning on the full bottle but you may not then know that this has happened and end up with two empty bottles, keep it simple I say. If you are on hook up it makes sense to run your fridge and any thing else for that matter on mains as you will pay the same amount of money for electric irrespective of how much you use, unless the site meters the lecky , some do most don't, be aware that a hook up feed can vary from 4 amps to 16 amps so according to what you are on you must switch things off if you turn the kettle on or use a fan heater, if you overload the hook up a trip will shut the feed off, this is no big deal as usually you can reset the trip and off you go again, however on some sites this will involve the Warden coming out and unlocking a box containing the trips and they tend to get a bit shirty if you keep doing it LOL.:danger::danger: When hooking up you MUST connect the end to your van first ,then then the plug to the hook up Power point, this is for safety ,never leave a live cable on the grass as this is dangerous, I mean if it is connected to the Hook up bollard and not to your van.:danger::danger:

In case you were unaware there are two main types of LPG, Propane, Red Bottles and Butane Blue Bottles, Butane is more calorific, [burns hotter] and is regulated at 28 milli bars because of this and Propane is regulated at 37 milli bars to compensate for being less calorific. The main advantage of Propane [which most of us use ] is that it turns from Liquid to gas at lower temperatures and is therefore better for Winter use, I use Propane at all times, you will hear the term [My gas has frozen ]if winter camping, it hasn't frozen , what has happened is that someone is on Butane and because of the cold it has failed to turn into gas.:dance:
