Just a quick post to thank everyone in the last year with their expert help and advice. Me and the missus have just finished our first ever motorhome holiday, 14 days in Scotland. Visited Bow Fiddle Rock which is a great possible POI right on the path leading to the rock. Orkney was windy, cold, flat but excellent beaches, blue sea and lots of Neolithic and Viking stuff the missus liked. The best view was the 180 degree view we have with the Elddis 120, waking up at The Brough of Birsay, looking out on the stormy sea whilst tucked up in bed with a cuppa. Beautifull. Then a drive to Aviemore, more photography sat in the rutting Rheindeer then off to Glencoe, Red Deer, landscapes. Then Northumberland then home. The motorhome worked a treat. Not one thing went wrong in 1350 miles. 30mpg fully loaded. All the mods ive done from advice on here came in very handy. The POI was great. Scotland has a zillion places to park up and not one person minded. Everyone in other motorhomes waved, I learned to slow and indicate to let the cars past which they appreciated. The freedom to come and go where you want. Why didn't I buy one years ago! I really can see why a lot of folk, especially the retired ones, head down to France Spain or tour around Europe.

The downsides? The missus snoring. I forgot to change the tyres the motorhome came with so the Chinese tyres were ok when it was dry but in the wet, the weight and grip problem became very apparent. The Michelins are on order.

How many times I had cars right up my arse! Im usually at about 3 to 5mph under the speed limit to avoid points, especially after my recent bought of relying on a sat nav. I have a rear view camera and reversing camera and some got very very close. Even had some lorries do it. The worst place is the road over Rannoch Moor through Glencoe. Over Rannoch when it was banging it down with rain, im following the car in front, a car is up my arse, then flies past and rams his car between me and the vehicle in front forcing me to break and slow down. Then a Mazda 5 flies past, jams himself in front of me about two yards from my bumper, a Skoda estate tries the same, cant get in, proceeds to go past a line of cars, in the rain, no visability on the wrong side of the road until ramming himself between some cars behind the lorry. Bloody crazy! Oh well, the high quality dash cams are on order for the motorhome and car. I do hope the police will like the pictures.

But anyway, otherwise a great break, some great advice from everyone and im now totally hooked. Next time the cats are coming too!

19 years ago, we were like you, but with very little knowledge, no experience and precious little access to advice and support...
.
You've got it made, kid.
Hope you are feeling as smitten as we still are, in 18 years time.
Good luck to you.

There's nothing quite like the wilds of Scotland to get you hooked on motorhoming!

Glad you visited us
Glad you enjoyed
Glad you had no trouble
Glad you joined the family!

Scotland is very nice and a good place to drive, been over most of west side larges etc.
We tip ,just touch you brake pedal with left foot and the cars will pull back,it drives them clean mad he he.
Do try n/ireland and donegal when funds allow as its bit like scotland except we wear trousers, well most of the time unless drunk, then we wear your ears out talking cr-p.

We have never really "done" Scotland, in 8 years of owning a motorhome, but that may all change next year, after ****** :(
We just don't fancy the midges..

Buy a spray of cactus oil,works 100%.

I don’t think it’s acceptable to use that word anymore - I know it’s all a bit PC but we call them “vertically challenged” now.

:)

Get up to the west coast Dave. You'll love it.

We tend to go up there in the winter though, so no midges.

We prefer Scotland early and late in the year, you miss the midges and most of the snow that way although by early and late I mean March and October :)

Cant say I have had too much trouble with folks trying to push me unless I just naturally ignore them, I get a lot less road rage in the van to what I do in the car but I will shout expletives and make hand gestures if someone cuts me up or blocks me. I have dents in the van to prove I do get road rage haha, sod em and just let them do what they want at the end of the day. :)

Thanks all. Now if only I can cure the missus snoring! As for midges, my mate at work is ex forces. He said the army lads use Avon Skin So Soft (dont snigger as I did). Apparently its the best stuff to repel the buggers. He said its not as effective as it used to be possibly due to less citrus but it might be worth a go. A paramedic I met when out doing my photography told me they have major problems with car accidents in summer up there due to midge attacks.

Oh well,im spending my last day on holiday fixing the rear bumper the missus damaged.

I can vouch for the Avon stuff , I cycled through Scotland a few years ago and it made a huge difference. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until the lovely couple running The Crask Inn north of Lairg told me about it, so I suffered a bit up to then. Sounded mad but I was desperate - it really worked for me!

:)
