Movin on uP

Hi we've a Motorhome at present and tow our car on a transporter trailer. We spend about 4 months in Spain during winter and both wild camp and site camp.

We are seriously considering buying a 5er and we are going to the Knutsford show in a couple of weeks to have a good look.

Are there any issues about wild camping in Spain and France with a 5er?

We very much like the Ever-lite 5er. Any advice would be welcome

Looking forward to replies to Yorkshire's question as we are in a similar position, the main downside I can see is the very smallest 5th wheeler is also the very largest caravan most sites will take e.g.28ft.

We had similar problems when owning a Winnebago, i.e. size and or weight was a concern for some sites!

mine is 20ft long 7ft 6ins wide and 10ft high . .total length 10metres . the beauty of an artic over normal 5er is the overlap is usually greater on the artic . mine as 7 seats in the cab ,sleeps 6 in the trailer . could sleep two in the cab with a bit of shifting around.
i have no probs wild camping most places ,be it here or away. dont use campsites if at all possible. had it 11yrs now. so think i like it. i say dont go for one with slideouts keep to the size of the body . looks more like a truck and as i need to not drop legs etc just jump in the front and drive off.
small windows for privacy and security.
cab be driven on a c1+e . or if needed a b+e with a bit of extra work.
can also be class one artic if i want it to be. all stupid rules , cheers alan.
the trailer is a lynton artic. i built the mitsubishi .it was a tipper and was our local grave diggers truck.
originally from new the trailer was pulled by a vw lt 50 . i still have that one as well.
ebay mini artic they do come up on there frequently.

10 meters Alan is just under 33 feet. Which highlights a negative regarding 5ers, ie to give 20 feet of living space the overall length needs to be 13 feet more, admittedly your rig comprises a crew cab. But if you don't have a crew cab, you're then limited to usually one passenger, or two if you have a double passeger seat.
I think this might dissuade some people from taking the 5er option.

the manouverability of an artic more than compensates for its length.
i was only trying to tell op. that an artic is shorter than a normal 5er .
the other thing is i dont need to pull a car etc . as many do behind large campers.
the flat fronted truck i use gives a much shorter train than the usual pickup type 5ers. possibly more seating as well. the op. already as stated their interest in 5ers.
having said that hello ron are you getting ready for off. not sure this year myself might have to leave later than usual. not sure if i might stay .if only to let me know its best to be away .ha ha . cu sn . alan.

As you say many larger M/homes tow a car, but I suspect the majority of your M/home observations(like mine) are based on overseas long term trips in the winter, where the usual M/homers are generally well off pensioners, whereas the majority of M/homes are probably on average smaller coachbuilds, vw vans and the like, used mainly in the summer for weekends and the 3 week annual hols. 5ers therefore may be considered as an option for the first group but not for the second.
You state the 5ers advantages, but the vast majority stick with the conventional ubiquitous "single unit" in its various guises... why?
I may be wrong {and often am) but I can't see many 65+ people taking up the 5er alternative, the proof is out there.
I hope your reason for late leaving to the winter sun is good one, it means a lot to you getting on the road I know. Myself, I get ready and think of going about week before the actual off. Which is why I usually forget something.
There's still a big chunk of the Brit summer to go yet!

is the reason good or bad . came back this year had opp on throat .went back for camera down . no its not gone . come back end of oct , if its not got bigger no opp . so have to wait and see . if i speak like a dalek next time i see you i shall still be living . but dont want to go there. maybe wait and have another small opp. only had six so far.
the 5er way is the way to get round the over 70,s weight restrictions . think its better than towing a normal trailer.
remember i do live in cornwall .we maybe sparcely populated but vw,s bongo,s transits , you name it we have possibly more per head than anywhere else in europe. and with the holiday makers you cant move down here for campers .
i use a bongo sometimes . better for stealth .

Alan, I guessed as much,I obviously didn't want to make a personal thing public possibly contrary to your wishes.
Will see you down in the sun for sure.
Having a small van for the summer in Cornwall and a large 5er for the extended overseas winter trip seems like you have your particular options covered, but not many M/homers have or want to outlay that much cash.
I've driven in about 50 or so countries but the steepest public road I've come across was in Cornwall, only a few hundred meters long. Also some of the narrowest lanes. A Bongo would be about as big as I'd go for local use.

only a few miles away is one of the uk,s biggest rv, campsites . itchy feet . always loads there so big stuff does get down here.
as for outlay. my vwlt and the trailer were only 1650quid when i bought them. i see trailers and units on ebay . an ldv unit went today for 900quid . last week a trailer didnt sell at 400quid . no reserve no one bid. i nearly went and got it. was a bit long but easy shorten it and it would look like mine in notime. bits for trucks are very often much cheaper than m,homes. bit like merc vans . an 814 truck is a much better buy than an 814 van. lot of metal and a better engine in the trucks . might not fetch as much but no dearer to run. think more should consider a truck than a van. there are some cheap trucks out there .
dont worry about my throat .it wont stop me talking . i may tape afew annoying comments just in case . ha ha . like your van would look nice with a good polish. ha ha . be nice after a good respray lose the dents etc, . you could always brush paint it with a broom. he hee . cheers alan.
