Fiat Gearbox problems

I bought a 2000 model Fiat Auto-Roller earler this year and shortly afterwards the speedometer failed.I took it to a gearbox specialist who removed the gearbox, fitted a new speedometer gear and a new clutch as the old one was a little worn.
Within 200 miles, there was a crunching noise when engaging third gear and then the same with second gear. The gearbox company removed the box again and found the synchromesh rings (I think that's what they're called) were badly worn. They replaced them and fitted another new clutch just in case the old one had caused the problem.
After driving less than 100 miles, exactly the same thing is happening with the crunching gears.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

I think I would be have word with the people doing the work
are you paying for each event thier diagnosis to the problem? sounds like you may have been better having a recon fitted with a small warranty

check what oil they are using and how long the bottle has been open as gearbox oil is hydroscopic and moistoir in oil will not allow the scrubbing action to allow the gears to slow down enough to engage the next gear this was a major problem on renault a few years back so bad in the morning it was near on imposible to select any gears we had to drain the oil after a 20 mile drive put fully synth oil in and drive again for 20 miles if not perfect repeat.
also about 10 years ago i can remember doing a mod on fiat camper whitch was to put a longer scuttle panel drain pipe on because before it would drain stright in to the gear box breather and give the same fault as you have got

jiff (still cant spell)

Fiat Gearbox Problems

The company who fitted the clutch for me are as baffled by this as I am. They are co-operating to try and resolve the problem. The gearbox itself is a recon box that was fitted only just over a year ago and was just out of warantee when the speedo failed.

Yes, I am aware of the problems with water ingress into the gearbox, but I've had the scuttle pipe re-sealed so that the water pours out well behind the gearbox. The latest gearbox problem happened in totally dry conditions. The problem of oil type / contaiminated oil did occur to me, but I found it difficult to believe that the problem could happen after only around 50 miles of driving. The gears crunch when starting from cold and when the oil has warmed up. I will check with them about the type of oil they are using when the motorhome goes back in on Monday. It is a specialist gearbox company who are carrying out the work and they are as anxious to get this sorted out as I am.

hi paulhhh123.
it seems strange to me that before the speedo problem the box was ok then suddenly, bingo, the synchro hubs/rings are badly worn and need replacing AND a second replacement clutch as well!!!!!!
i think they should take the apprentice off the job and put a real mechanic on to it.
this sounds to me like a fault in the clutch dept and not the gearbox.

john.
