Wondering if anybody can help or advise me, I have a 2001 Fiat Ducato 1.9td 5 speed. Although the motorhome is 2001 it is the older model, Mk2, X223 I believe.
The gearbox crunches between 2nd and 3rd gear, common problem I believe. I had the gearbox drained and refilled with fresh oil and was advised by the mechanic that the gearbox oil was contaminated with water, another common fault with these motorhomes, Water entering the gearbox from the windscreen via the drain scuttle and into the gearbox via the reverse switch.
The mechanic advised me that the gearbox might not be economic for reconditioning due to the water ingress, and I was wondering if anybody could advise on a replacment gearbox, or specialist gearbox repairer near me in Fife Scotland.

Common fault ,requires extra half pint of oil in box, there is a mod for this but you maybe to late,a 75 /90 semi Sinth oil is best,g box parts are like hens teath for them now.

Not much help, but here's my tale.

Motorhome was seven years old when bought, and after 3 months the gearbox started to crunch. Had it removed and a recon fitted with a 12 month guarantee. A month after the guarantee ran out the crunching started again. So for the last ten years I've driven it like that. It has got a bit worse, in that, it now crunches between 1 and 2 as well. I have noticed that when I set off, and the gearbox oil is, I presume, cold, it doesn't crunch provided I don't rev it too hard. The mechanic did put in extra thick oil, but it didn't seem to make much difference. I have been told, by a different mechanic, that they should be run with thinner oil. It's staying as it is.

As Trev says, put in new oil plus an extra half litre. Then add something like Molyslip gearbox additive and see how it goes.

Another suggestion is to strip, clean and adjust the gearbox external linkage as the water that got into the gearbox can also get at the linkages.
