We have spotted a van that ticks most of the boxes for us, 2004 reg, 6.25m long 3500kg GVW with fixed bed etc. The box that it doesn't click is the engine, I had set my mind on either a Mercedes 2.2L or Fiat 2.8JTD and it has the 2.3JTD engine (110bhp I think) so does anyone have any advice or experience, good or bad with this engine? Is it anygood? Or should I hold out for one of two engines I had my mind set on?
As usual any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Del

The bigger the CC the more torque for pulling with low revs, more easy to drive.:dog:
Folk get mixed up betreen torque and brake horse power, one must be swapped of for the other,so high torque low down means less hp or the other way round, engines now have turbos to try and get both which now makers use small cc engines which gets a bit of both.
As drivers very few of use drive at toppish end revs but do toddle along country lanes and through towns /villages where torque is best for pulling a big van away from a standing start.

I have had two motorhomes with the 2.3 engine, the first was a 2004 5 speed which was ok, and later we has a 2010 with the 6 speed. The 5 speed was ok, although on the motorway the 6 speed is way better, with the top two gears quite close together giving more flexibility without having to rev the engine too hard. In between these 2 we had a motorhome with the 2.8 jtd again from 2004. I cant honestly say i found this engine to be any better than the 2.3 in any area. If you look at the specs, the 2.8 only gives around 30n/m of torque more than the 2.3 at the same revs. The 2.3 is the more modern engine, and wont give you any problems, but the 6 speed box on the later chassis makes it better still.

From what I've read about these engines they appear to be only 17 hp and about 30nM down on the 2.8jtd. In any event you'll find it a big improvement on the 1.9td you have now. Possibly look at remapping. Here's what comes up for our 2.8jtd at Quantum Tuning, so if you have the details for the van you're looking at see what a remap could give you.

Good luck with the van hunt.

It depends on the weightof the motorhome attached to the unit.

Our three Murvi Morellos were, are panel vans, first in 1999, last in 2016.

I have found the engines responsive and with not much between them.

When I collected the latest, 2016, I had tried out the morello on a ford and a mercedes and was not impressed with either.

Apart from the reverse judder on Morello 2, fixed promptly by Fiat, we have been very satisfied with the Fiat engine.

Our 2006 Hymer (owned 5 years) has a 5 speed 2.3 JTD engine. I have to say we have been impressed with it. Plenty of power and torque and tows my motorcycle when required as though it is not there. The gearbox is not brilliant as the gate is close together and lacks feel but you (mostly) get used to it. We get 27 mpg (over cab) and we cruise at 60 mph. It will cruise at 70 (or more) but gets a bit noisy and doesn't feel relaxed.

Before changing van- ask yourself "Do I want to visit any LEZs (current or future) ?"

If you want to go into LEZs (we often visit London to go to the the theatre) then make sure the van is compliant.

LEZs are breeding faster then rabbits so think about the future, if your home is inside a potential LEZ using an old van will be very expensive.

Never had a 2.8 but the Ducato I have now is an 04 reg 2.3 and I will say it is a lot more nimble than the 53 reg 1.9 that I used to have, it's also a lot better on fuel consumption.
