We fancy going to Spain this year but have only got 16 days holiday we can go in June. Just had a quote for the van at £851.00 which has made us think about driving down. What do you all think when you take in the time ,fuel and toll roads.Do the crossing prices get cheaper the later i leave it to book

Great reply *****, must say I prefer to drive down and stop off at an aires or two on the way, (not the motorway type). As long as your fit enough to do this, I think you get more satisfaction out of your journey, as long as you don't overdo the driving hours.

Happy Camping:)

And as far as BF are concerned,no,they get more expensive the later you leave it to book , what a rip off! even if you join BF travel club you don't get discount off cabins etc so still over £600 at a guess.

Thanks for all your help i think i will be driving.
This site is really usefull for hands on information and advice.

Hi Tissy.

I'm with ***** 100% on this. Yes I know, what are the chances! I'm planning two weeks in August and have handed Sea France the grand sum of £66 for the return trip Dover/Calais. The loose plan is to drive down to around La Rochelle but if it's not hot enough for SWMBO we'll be heading down into Spain.

I live in Poole but would rather drive all the way around than hand over money to Brittany Ferries.

There is a relatively cheap option of Portsmouth to Cherbourg on the Condor freighter on summer sundays but my feeling is that the cheaper crossing at Dover more than offsets the additional fuel cost and my holiday starts as soon as I land on mainland Europe, wherever that is.

Whichever crossing you decide on, have a great time!

For my two penneth, I have to agree with Kell, I tend to hit Calais and at that point the holiday journey etc begins.

Aires, relais de routiers for lunch, and meeting folk are all part of it.

The economics of England to Spain, Hull Zeebrugge etc I have never got my head around. Mileage and wear and tear savings aside, it seems a healthy premium is paid for the privilidge.

Other than if you dislike driving long stints, I cant see a benefit.

We did think about the long ferry this year but I couldn't get it to work out economically, we don't use tolls or campsites so it's just the cost of diesel. Might have even considered doing it if we could have used the Tesco vouchers but they stopped letting you use them for that a few years ago so now we use Eurotunnel for about £30's worth of Tesco vouchers :D.

It can be a tiring journey driving down & we share the driving between us, there are quite a lot of long stretches of either free motorways or dual carriageways so it is easy enough for anybody to drive (more my nerves having the wife drive through some of the narrower roads :eek:)
