Ferries - Advice & Suggestions

We have just joined this site having purchased a Hymer 654. Previous to this we did lots of ultra-wild camping in Zimbabwe and South Africa using our trusty old Landy (the toilet looked just like a spade!)

I would like a little advice regarding ferry crossing, including costs, vehicle size & weight, best times etc.

We live in the Newbury area and are reasonably close to Dover, Portsmouth and Pembrook. We are planning to do several short-ish trips to Europe and hope to see Ireland and IOW. My Hymer is 6.86m x 2.25m x 2.9m (LxWxH). There are six of us (four kids).

For Europe I am planning to take the odd Friday & Monday off, so we would leave from work (currently Reading) on Thursday evening - hoping to make a late-Thursday or early-Friday crossing with a view to coming back on Monday evening. My kids are home-schooled so we are flexible. Pity that I have to work for money :(

Ferry Prices

In my experience with both car and camper van you cannot beat Norfolk Line (Dover/Dunkerque) for crossings to Europe.

Ferry Prices

hi. just returned from a 2750ml trip to eastern spain and i must recommend norfolk line ferries. swift contiki at 7mtr length, 68 quid return night crossing. 2 hr crossing dover to dunkirk. was quoted £15 per mtr or part mtr over this length so dont forget to include your bikerack when booking!.

Thanks for the replies. I have in the past (with normal vehicle) use Norfolk and they were fine. I did some checking, and as soon as you go over five passengers (driver included) the Norfolk price increases to around £120, which is £10 more that SeaFrance. There are six of us. Which web site do you folk normally book with?

ferry bookings

i went straight to norfolk line web site. after using northsea ferries (hull>zeebruge) at several hundred pounds a time any price was acceptable.
a phone call revielled that the price was the same booking thru the caravan club so no discount there then! the saving with norfolk paid for a lot of diesel in france/spain.
